Elliot Saltman seven shots off the
-
pace on Hi5 Pro Tour last day
-
FROM THE SPANISH Hi5 PRO TOUR WEBSITE
Local Spaniard Ignacio Sanchez Palencia is the co leader on five-under-par 139 alongside Swedens Bjorn Pettersson after day two of the Hi5 Pro Tour's Altorreal Open.
Ignacio played a two-under-par 70 to close the gap on Round 1 leader, Bjorn Pettersson in almost perfect scoring conditions.
Close on their heels going into the final round in joint third position are England's Alex Belt , Sweden's Fredrick Hammarberg , Iceland's Stefan Mar Stefansson and Spain's Dani Alonso.
Just one shot further back are current order of merit leader Matt Evans (66 low round of the day), last week's Senior winner Gary Wolstenholme (pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency), this week playing off the back tees against the field, and Spain's Carlos Aguilar Quesada.
An exciting final round is expected with no fewer than 13 players lying within four shots of the leaders in the chase for the Hi5 Pro Tour's Altorreal title.
The odds are against a Saltman winning for the third event in a row. Last week's winner Elliot Saltman, who followed in the footsteps of his younger brother, Lloyd, is seven strokes off the pace with 18 holes to go. Stranger things have happened!
Second lowest round of the day was produced by the much improving English amateur Richard Carter.

Elliot Saltman has ground

to make up in Spain

FROM THE Hi5 PRO TOUR WEBSITE
Bjorn Pettersson, representing Sweden, played a near faultless round of 68 to take a slender one-shot lead into the second round of the Murcia-based Hi5 Pro Tour's Altorreal Open in Spain.
With a one-hour suspension of play due to fog, the field found scoring conditions difficult on the Dave Thomas-designed parkland course.
Tied in second place, one shot behind, are Sweden's Felix Fihn and local Spaniard Ignacio Sanchez Palencia.
A special mention must also go this week to Caroline Martins, representing Norway, who is competing against the men from the back tees. She had a round of 79.
SCOTSWATCH: Last week's winner, Elliot Saltman (pictured above) from Scotland, is in joint 16th place after a 74. Elliot had birdies at the long sixth and the 15th but bogeys at the third, short eighth, long 12th and 14th.He has a lot of ground to make up to repeat his success and make it three in a row for the Saltman family from the Lothians. Youngest of the three brothers, all supported by Aegon, Zack Saltman, is sharing 26th place on the 77 mark.

2,100 Euros cash prize for Lothians man, 7,176 Euros from three events

Lloyd Saltman, lady pro winner Johanna Lundberg (Sweden) and senior award winner Miguel Angel Martin (Spain) pictured after the prizegiving today.

Lloyd Saltman wins by five, Callum Macaulay jt second

FROM THE SPANISH Hi5 PRO TOUR WEBSITE
Lloyd Saltman from Scotland went wire to wire to capture the 2010 Polaris World Condado Open today with an 11-under-par total of 205 earning him a five-shot margin of victory. The middle brother of the “Saltman brothers” had tremendous composure the entire round today, reported tournament director Wayne Hachey.
“You could see how cool he played his round today, the mark of a real champion. He just got on with it and took care of business, and did not let anyone come from behind with his solid performance of 70 today and a -11 total.”
Another Scotsman, former European Tour player Callum Macaulay, and Challenge Tour player Floris de Vries (Netherlands) were his nearest rivals. Both finished at -6.
De Vries fired a great 65 today on the demanding Nicklaus layout. After a short frost delay, the blue skies and gentle winds provided great scoring conditions to go along with the superb putting surfaces at Condado.
In the ladies section Johanna Lundberg (Sweden) shot a final round 71 to win by one shot over Josefin Leijon also from Sweden.
The senior award was won by European Tour veteran Miguel Angel Martin (Spain) who displayed his usual talents and closed the event with a fine 69 (nine shots better than his opening round.
*Lloyd Saltman's cash reward for victory was 2,100 Euros, giving him a grand total of 7,716 Euros from the three Hi5 Pro Tour events he has played.

GOLF TOURNAMENT WITH A DIFFERENCE

£1million jackpot on offer at Archerfield

Links from August 3 to 6

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ED HODGE, CAPITAL CITY PRESS
A unique high-stakes golf event, where the winner will walk off with a mouthwatering £1m jackpot, has been announced.
The eagerly-awaited tournament will be held/hosted at Archerfield Links, the private members' club in East Lothian.
Organisers hope to attract a star-studded worldwide field to the exclusive venue for the lavish 'Cool Million Challenge' which will combine golf and gambling for a prize fund in excess of £2m.
It is hoped former Ryder Cup captains Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam will take part in pursuit of the largest first prize in an unsanctioned event in the world this year.
Big-name US-based seniors have also been earmarked to compete over the Dirleton Links from August 3-6, along with leading ladies such as Laura Davies.
Promoter David Copeland, an entrepreneur in the online gambling industry and a keen golfer, is behind the concept to mix a high-stakes wager with an exciting pro tournament, two weeks after The Open at St Andrews.
Restricted to 60 talented golfers around the world meeting a strict criteria, commercial or individual sponsors - the gamblers - face the ultimate challenge to place their bet on a chosen player to win the £1m.
The professionals will compete over two rounds of stroke play, with the top 16 playing straight match play to establish the champion. The entry fee for the competition - poised to be televised - is set at £50,000 per golfer, representing the sponsor's bet.
Copeland said: "I'm a gambler so I wanted to launch a golf competition with a high level of entry fee for a relatively small field. That gives everyone a chance of a top prize, namely the £1 million figure.
"I had to find a venue that was really exclusive, really private and there are not many clubs like Archerfield. I'm using my contacts globally in the gambling industry and commercial world, in terms of sponsorship, to drive together 60 teams.
"We didn't just want a Tour event. We're not looking for golfers in the top 500 of the world rankings, or those with a current European or US PGA Tour card. We're looking for guys off the Nationwide Tour, the Challenge Tour and the Seniors.
"There are also people around the world gambling extremely high stakes whom you have never even heard of, professionals in Las Vegas who don't need to play on Tour but can win big money in gambling games.
"Over a course that is not overly long, we have also decided to include female golfers of any ranking and standard. We are hoping to have some of the world's top 10 playing in it.
"Could they beat a guy off the Challenge Tour over Archerfield, or a leading Senior? So you start to have a dilemma and peak the interest of the gambler of where they think the value lies."
Archerfield Links, designed by David J Russell, continues to grow in stature, having already hosted Gary Player's European Invitational, as well as Sir Ian Botham and Ronan Keating's Celebrity Challenge.
The Ladies Scottish Open will also make a welcome return to the calendar at Archerfield from August 18 to 20 this year.

Hi5 Pro Tour in Spain

England 1-2 with Lloyd Saltman joint third

The Spanish Hi5 Pro Tour's Valle del Este Open this week provided an England 1-2 with Lloyd Saltman tieing for third place with Spain's Miguel Angel Martin.
Alex Bett shot rounds of 67, 66 and 70 over the par-71 course for a 10-under-par total of 203.
He won 2,000 Euros and a Thomas Sabo watch by finishing five shots ahead of another Englishman, Matthew Cryer, who scored 67, 68 and 73.
Former Walker Cup player and Open leading amateur, Saltman, who finished with a four-under-par total of 209, will be cursing his second-round 77 which was the not so tasty "meat" in the sandwich of a first round of seven-under 64 and a third and last round of three-under-par 68.
Even a par-matching round of 71 on the second day would have seen him tie with winner Bett on 203.
Elliot Saltman shared fifth place on three-under-par 210 with scores of 70, 71 and 69.
Zack, the youngest of the three Saltman brothers finished on 27-over-par 240 with scores of 87, 75 and 78. That put him in a tie for 33rd place.
The ladies' pro event was won by Rhian Wyn Thomas, who, as a Vale of Glamorgan player, was a member of the Wales team who made a successful defence of the Women's Home Internationals crown at Irvine Golf Club, Ayrshire last September.
Rhian is now a rookie pro and she had three impressive scores of 73, 71 and 74 for a five-over-par total of 218, winning by eight shots from Norway's Caroline Martens (75-80-71) with Switzerland's Sabina Imboden last of three on 253 with scores of 84, 84 and 85.

As usual the WPGA final will also take place at the same time (August 12-13) over 36 holes with
a qualifier at Dunham Forest. Tracy Loveys (Bigbury) will be chasing a third successive title.
Colin Mee, managing director of Glenmuir, who are sponsoring the event for a record 18th year,
said:
“The Oxfordshire is a fabulous venue for the final and we’re looking forward to working closely
with the PGA to make this year’s championship the best ever.
“With an equally impressive list of qualifying
venues I’m confident the professionals will
respond by taking part and creating a truly
memorable championship.”
PGA chief executive Sandy Jones added: “The
Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship is one
of the highlights of the year for our members and
it has been our policy in this event for many
years now to play on genuine championship golf
courses and The Oxfordshire will without doubt
provide a superb test to determine the champion
golfer for 2010.”
The Oxfordshire, which is owned by Leaderboard
Golf, enjoys the distinction of being the first UK
design of renowned architect Rees Jones who has
carved out a challenging and testing 7,200-long
course, with more than 100 bunkers and four
man-made lakes.
The course has proved a popular tournament
venue and some of golf’s biggest names have
tasted success there including Ryder Cup
captains past and present, Bernhard Langer
and Colin Montgomerie.
Tim Pettifer, general manager of The
Oxfordshire, is looking forward to staging the
Glenmuir final which he said caps an exciting
year for the club.
“Leaderboard Golf is synonymous with only
the best names in golf and so we are delighted
to now be able to add Glenmuir to the list by
staging the Glenmuir PGA Professional
Championship,” he said.
“In particular with The Oxfordshire being
chosen for August 2010, shortly after the
opening of its new 50-bedroom four star hotel
and spa, the timing could not be better.”

Hi Colin,
This seems like great news. Is there any help people can give regarding raising funds or is it coming from public bodies?
I don't mean we all give a fiver but I'm sure a lot of the people who read your site will have contacts who would be interested in helping. I know I certainly have.
Best Wishes

Saltman outclassed by Danish amateur but

wins top cash prize of 1,650 Euros in Spain

Lloyd Saltman finished nine shots behind a Danish amateur Lasse Sonne Nielsen but won the top cash prize of 1650 Euros in this week's 54-hole Hi5 Spanish Tour event at the newly-opened Condado de Alhama golf course in south-east Spain.
Nielsen spreadeagled the field with a brilliant first round of 11-under-par 61 and followed that up with 71 and 70 for a 14-under-par total of 202. His prize was a Thomas Sabo watch.
Saltman scored 71, 68 and 72 for 211 finished three shots ahead of two players in joint third place, Englishman Ben Welch and Dutchman Tim Sluiter.
Zack Saltman, the youngest of the three Lothians golfing brothers, was well down the field on 224 with scores of 70, 78 and 76. On 226 was Shaun McAllister with 74, 77 and 75 for 226.
A Scotland international from yesteryear, David James, reappeared out of the blue to win the seniors' section and a first prize of 1,000 Euros and a Thomas Sabo watch by seven shots with a total of 207. James, like Nielsen, started with a brilliant first round - in his case a 63 - and a couple of par 72s after that were good enough to consolidate his victory from Englishman Kevin Dickens.
In the ladies division Sweden´s Elin Emanualsson eased her way to a 10 shot victory with another solid performance on the Nicklaus signature course ahead of Josefin Leijon also of Sweden. The ladies were using the Hi5 Pro Tour to prepare for the upcoming European Ladies Qualifying School at La Manga next week and also the week after.

Stepping back in time with hickory-shafted

clubs can be good for your golf ....

FROM THE SCOTSMAN NEWSPAPER WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
The men were very dapper, the women extremely elegant. The golf bags they carried were neither multi-coloured nor big enough to accommodate half the stock from the local club professional's shop.
The scene was the opening round of the PGA World Hickory Open at Gullane and, according to those competing, both young and old, the chance to take a step back in time had certainly proved enjoyable.
"This is the first time I have ever played with hickory clubs and it was good fun," said Maximilian Walz, a 17-year-old from Germany, playing in one of two teams entered in the pro-am by the Loretto Golf Academy.
Like many taking part, Walz, an amateur who plays off +2, found it difficult at first to get used to sets that, basically, consisted of a brassie, long iron, mashie, mashie niblick, niblick and putter. However, once he'd discovered that he shouldn't be trying to hit the ball as hard as he normally would, the new recruit to the Musselburgh school's blossoming golf programme savoured the experience.
"I'm aware that players like Bobby Jones played with these type of clubs and know how well they were capable of scoring with them," added Walz. "When I go back to Germany, I'll be telling my national coach how much I enjoyed this experience."
According to Alasdair Good, the head professional at Gullane, his first round with a set of hickory clubs – he shot a two-over 73 over the No 2 course to share the lead with Steven Taylor and Andrew Oldcorn at the halfway stage – had definitely proved an enlightening experience.
"The first trick you have to learn is to feel how the club performs and adapt your swing accordingly," he said. "You have to be 100 per cent committed with every shot and the one thing it would certainly teach every golfer is that they would have to improve their timing.
"I also think it opens your eyes to playing the game more imaginatively because you can't play that shot through the air over bunkers that we see in the game today with the modern equipment."
Former British women's open amateur stroke-play champion and trainee pro Heather MacRae, who works for Good in the shop at Gullane, enjoyed both the challenge and also the opportunity to dress up for the day.
"I love the whole idea of taking a step back in time," she said. This week's event is the fifth World Hickory Open. It started as a nine-hole tournament at Musselburgh Old Links before moving to Craigielaw.
Now it's part of a Festival of Hickory Golf and Lionel Freedman, the driving force behind the event, is hoping it can continue going from strength to strength.
"It is growing in terms of enjoyment, in terms of numbers and also in terms of venues," said the 75-year-old current club captain at Craigielaw. "I'd like to see it continue being played on historic golf courses, perhaps even some of the really important venues, the likes of a St Andrews.
"We also get tremendous support, in particular, from Sweden and I would also like to take it there one year."

WORLD PRO HICKORY CHAMPIONSHIP

WOOD YOU BELIEVE IT? IT'S STILL

ANYBODY'S WORLD HICKORY TITLE

The world professional hickory championship, and a prize fund of £12,500, is up for grabs by any one of at least a dozen players at the halfway stage of the 36-hole event of the Gullane 2 course.
The pros played the first round in conjunction with a pro-am in which their individual scores are carried over to Friday's round which is played as a straight stroke-play.
Well, with hickory shafts in their hands, can even the pros guarantee all the shots will be straight?
Only four strokes cover the leading 12 players after a day when high winds made conditions even more difficult for the use of old-fashioned clubs.
Gullane pro Alasdair Good - better known for being the "founding father" of the Wee Wonders children's championship - shares the lead on two-over-par 73 with Tartan Tour regulars Steven Taylor (Bothwell Castle) and former PGA championship winner Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre).
They are only one stroke ahead of Fraser Mann (Musselburgh), whose brother Lindsay won the title last year, and Paul Wardell (Whitekirk).
Sharing sixth place on 75 are Alan Lockhart (Ladybank), Mark King (Kingsifled) and past Scottish boys match-play champion Lee Harper (Archerfield Links).
Defending champion Lindsay Mann is one of four players ninth place on 76. He is not out of it yet.
Oldcorn led the amateur trio, rejoicing in the quaint name of "Baggies Bruisers," of Colin Binnie (handicap 6), Robert Skinner (18) and David Wishart (18) to victory in the team event with a net score of 10-under-par 61.

Skipper Dalgleish looking for big things from

his "Black Watch" pair in Walker Cup

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By Mark Reason
Seven Englishmen, two Scots and an Irishman, with an average age of 21, are being sent over the top against America's best young guns when the Walker Cup match begins at historic Merion, in Pennsylvannia, on Saturday morning (US time)
It is the sort of tactic that usually ends in a bloodbath, but GB&I captain Colin Dalgleish does not agree. He thinks the result will be close – three previous Walker Cups have been decided by a point – and he is relying on his 'Black Watch' to spearhead the team.
Scots Gavin Dear, 25, and Wallace Booth, 24, are the two oldest members of the GB&I team and they are used to winning. Both men played in the Scotland team that won last year's Eisenhower (the world cup of amateur golf) and this year's European Championships.
Booth has been brought up to be a fighter. His father Wallace, a former bouncer for the Beatles, represented Great Britain at heavyweight wrestling and won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. He still thinks he was robbed. Sister Carly became the youngest player to represent GB&I at last year's Curtis Cup.
The performance of Booth and Dear may just decide the match. If they can intimidate the Americans, then GB&I have a chance. But if the Americans get on top early, then the perma-tanned flag waving will turn even the most stoical stomach.
Whatever the outcome, there is always much entertainment to be had from playing 'Shooting Stars.' This year is the golden anniversary of the great American team of 1959 that included a 19 year-old Jack Nicklaus. Since then Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy have all played in the Walker Cup.
In the American team Morgan Hoffman, 19, looks as though he might be the next mighty golfer. But even if Hoffman turns out to be more of a Lucas Glover – a member of the 2001 American team – than a Golden Bear, he would still have a wonderful career ahead of him. Glover is now the US Open champion.
The pick of the GB&I team in future years may be Tommy Fleetwood, 18. He won this year's Scottish open amateur stroke-play championship at Murcar Links with a record score and was runner-up in the Amateur Championship when just 17. Is Fleetwood Britain's next Open champion?
Meanwhile, a closing double bogey from Dane Soren Hansen left England's Chris Wood and Australian Scott Strange sharing the halfway lead at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne on Friday.
Wood, the 21 year-old from Bristol who was third in The Open in July, continued his bid for a first European Tour title with a 69.
Strange, winner of last year's Wales Open and this season's China Open, scored a 68, while Hansen's 71 dropped him into a tie for third with South African James Kingston and England's Ross Fisher.
Laura Davies remains on course to retain her title at the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open at Wiener Neustadt in Austria as she maintained a share of the lead after two rounds.
The 45 year-old from England is level with Germany's Bettina Hauert and Marjet van der Graaff from Holland, with the trio finishing at eight-under-par 136 before play was suspended due to darkness with just one group left to finish.

HSBC Women’s Champions boasts greatest

field ever assembled in Asia

PRESS RELEASE
The HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore next month will attract the strongest field of golfers ever seen at an Asian tournament. The 78 player line-up is missing only three of the active players in the world’s top 40, and will include every available winner from the 2008 LPGA season and every Major winner over the past three years currently playing.
The 2009 LPGA season teed-off last week in Hawaii but already the star players are setting their sights on ‘Asia’s Major’ from 5th – 8th March at Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC).
Tournament organisers today announced that in total 35 of the world’s top 40 players will compete for the US$2million prize purse, much to the delight of the title sponsors.
“Our goal when we created the HSBC Champions “brand” was to bring world-class golf to Asia. No one can doubt that we have achieved that now,” declared HSBC’s Group Head of Sponsorship Giles Morgan.
“Padraig Harrington has described the creation of our Shanghai tournament as the turning point for men’s golf in Asia and I think Sergio Garcia winning the HSBC Champions last year to become world number two proved the world-class pedigree. Now we have virtually every great female player in the world today coming to Singapore for the HSBC Women’s Champions, and of course the world number one is defending her title. It’s a credit to Singapore and to everyone involved that the tournament has been embraced so quickly by the stars.”
This list of entrants includes America's Angela Stanford and Australian Katherine Hull who are among the hottest players on the planet at the moment.
The 31-year-old Stanford won last weekend's LPGA season-opener - the SBS Open - to record her third win in seven LPGA events.. Stanford burst into form last September, winning the Bell Micro LPGA Classic, winning again at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational and finishing no worse than sixth in her other four events at the back end of the season.
“I’m coming off a fantastic year and I’m hopeful my momentum continues to place me in contention to win. I look forward to competing in Singapore in early March. The HSBC Women’s Champions attracts the best players in the world and a victory at this prestigious event would be treasured...….it’s on everyone’s priority list!” said Angela Stanford
Hull, who won the CN Canadian Open and had another six top-ten finishes last year, leaped five places up to 21st in the World Rankings after her victory two weekends ago in the European and Australian Tours' co-sanctioned ANZ Masters.
“The HSBC is an awesome tournament, it’s a great golf course and it’s one of the strongest fields in golf. I’m looking forward to contending there. This is a huge confidence booster because in the past I haven’t always started the year so well,” the 26-year-old Hull said.
The Korean stars continue to have a strong presence amongst the golfing elite with Seon Hwa Lee (10th), Eun-Hee Ji (14th), Jee Young Lee (15th) and Hee-Won Han (16th) all joining 2008 Major winners and leaders of the “Dragon Ladies” age group Inbee Park and Jiyai Shin in next month’s battle for the champion’s crown.
Seon Hwa Lee tied with Stanford for 12th position last year and went on to take victories at the Ginn Tribute Hosted by ANNIKA and the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship Presented by John Q. Hammons.
She said, "I always enjoy coming back to Asia to compete and I especially enjoy playing in Singapore. I have fond memories from winning the 2007 HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship and I would dearly love to add the HSBC Women's Champions title to those memories."
Joining the elite field at Asia’s richest female golfing event will be local amateur Joey Poh. Poh came out on top of 13 other hopefuls in a two-day qualifying tournament last week at TMCC and she will now represent Singapore in the main event next month. Joey is also currently a student of the HSBC Youth Golfers Excellence Programme.
“Having the world’s top players showing their support and commitment to the second edition of the HSBC Women’s Champions is testament to its success last year in Singapore. We are delighted to be hosting an array of talent from across the globe in what has quickly established itself as Asia’s most prestigious event for our female golfers,” commented Robbie Henchman, Senior Vice President, IMG.
The qualification criteria mirrors that of the men’s HSBC Champions, with winners from around the world invited to compete for the coveted “Champion of Champions” title. Winners on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, leading money winners from the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA), Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour, Ladies European Tour (LET), Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG), Duramed FUTURES Tour, Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) and the top player from the continent of Africa all qualify, making this the most international and impressive women’s field ever assembled in Asia.
The HSBC Women’s Champions 2009 will boast a prize money of US$2 million (US$300,000 to the winner), the largest purse for a women’s event in Asia. The HSBC Women’s Champions, sanctioned by the LPGA, will be played over 72 holes of individual stroke play with a field of 78 golfers.

Lindsay's the Mann for Hickory

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Carnoustie's Lindsay Mann, a Scotland amateur international and GB&I Walker Cup player of the early 1980s, won the World Hickory Open golf championship with a two-over-par round of 73 at Craigielaw Golf Club today (Friday).
The combination of being restricted to only six hickory-shafted clubs of pre-1935 vintage and a swirling wind meant that sub-par scores were simply not on.
"Even the pros cannot get nearly as much distance with a hickory club as they are used to. We cut the course down to 6,250yd but that didn't help them much with the wind getting up," said PGA Scottish Region tournament director Michael McDougall.
It's treated as a fun day but one that makes the players appreciate just how skilful the top players were in the days of hickory shafts - and old-fashioned golf balls. Perhaps a return to hickory shafts instead of ever-longer courses is the way forward.
Mann won the £1,700 top prize with a card that included three birdies - most players struggled to get one - at the long second, 14th and long 18th. He bogeyed the short eighth, 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th in halves of 35 and 38.
Defending champion and Walker Cup player of 2005 and 2007 before he turned pro, Lloyd Saltman, playing over his home course, was runner-up with a 74, two more than his winning score of 12 months ago, to earn a £1,369 cheque.
Lloyd could birdie only the long second and short eighth in halves of 36 and 38. Hhe bogeyed the third, fifth, sixth, 12th and 13th - and did well to finish with five straight pars.
Bishopbriggs' Robert Arnott managed only one birdie but matching the inward par of 36, helped him collect the third-place prize of £1,027 for a 75.
Lee Harper (Archerfield Links), Scottish boys match-play champion in 1999 when Musselburgh was his home club, had a 76 which included double bogey 7s at the second and the fourth in halves of 40 and 36. After his early misfortunes, Lee got the hickory hang of it before the turn and parred the last 11 holes.
Also on 76 was the third past Walker Cup player in the field, Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Links). He played in the same 1983 team captained by Charlie Green at Hoylake. Oldcorn's card included a triple bogey 6 at the short third as well as birdies at two long holes, the second and the 18th.
The only female player in the field, Gullane assistant professional Heather MacRae from Dunblane had an 89. Winner of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Nairn in 2005 and the Welsh open stroke-play in 2007, Heather had four double bogeys - but no doubt enjoyed herself immensely as everybody in the field of 80 did.
One of the cluster of Swedes, pros and amateurs, who came over for event had a three-figure score but he is going home happy because he got his first and only par at the 18th.

Midas Tour announces new link-up,
new sponsor - and plans for ladies tour
Britain’s new professional golf tour, the Midas Tour, has announced an "Association of Tours" with a new tour based in the North of England, The Players Tour.
The link-up will give members of each tour automatic associate membership of the other, and there are also plans for co-sanctioned events in addition to the tours’ separate tournaments.
“This is another major benefit for our members,” said Midas Tour director Paul Seymour, himself a professional player. “I know that pros are looking for high quality competition without spending a fortune, and this association gives our members even better value with a tremendous new benefit, which is probably unique among development tours in the UK.”
The Midas Tour is also encouraging women professionals, and category 1 amateurs, to join its planned Ladies Pro Golf Tour.
“Many women professionals have made the point that there are not enough events for them, so if there is sufficient demand, we will run the new ladies tour as separate events through 2008,” said Seymour.
The Midas Tour will consist of 18 events throughout 2008, including an end-of-season pro-am competition.
New golf clothing label Lateral Hazard is sponsoring the order of merit with a £1,000 clothing deal for the winner, and will also kit out the tour’s staff.
The tour gets under way at Orchardleigh Golf Club, Frome, Somerset, on April 8 and 9, and will include events across the South of England and the Midlands, with two-day 36-hole tournaments at some of the country’s most attractive courses.
The expected first prize at each event will be around £2,000, with a minimum of £1,000 if the entry is low.
The Midas Tour has already attracted players with top-level experience on the European Tour, Sunshine Tour and European Seniors Tour.
Paul Eales won the 1994 Extremadura Open on the European Tour and has earned more than £1 million in prize money. He is now increasingly well-known as a commentator for the BBC and Setanta Sports.
Australian Daniel Gaunt played on the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour and finished third in the 2004 EuroPro order of merit and runner-up the following year, when he also won the £10,000 Peugeot International.
Along with others who have played on the Seniors Tour, the two bring a wealth of experience to the Midas Tour, which is designed mainly as a stepping stone for budding professionals, keen to progress to the Challenge Tour and European Tour.
Players and potential sponsors wanting information should contact Paul Seymour on 01769 560611 or email themidastour@hotmail.co.uk Further details are available at www.themidastour.com

STEWART SPENCE CHIPS IN TO
HELP LADIES-ONLY FESTIVAL

IN SPAIN NEXT MONTH

Aberdeen hotel owner Stewart Spence, pictured right, is chipping in 2,000 Euros to the prize fund for a Spanish golf festival for women professionals and amateurs next month.
It's the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival from February 10 to 23 at the five-star golf resort in Murcia, south-east Spain where the mid-February temperatures are reputed to be the warmest in Spain.
There will be six competitions, two of them 36-holers, over the two weeks. Competitors can go for one week or two.
The 1999 Open champion and former Ryder Cup player Paul Lawrie, his coach Neil Marr and Scotland youth cap Philip McLean (Peterhead) recently spent a week at Hacienda del Alamo and came home raving about the Dave Thomas-designed course and the excellent practice facilities.
North-east man Billy Sim is the director of golf at the five-star resort.
"I am always delighted to help out a new golfing venture and this sounds a great idea for the lady professionals and amateurs to get in some serious practice for the new season with the bonus of some low-key competition to help sharpen them up," said Stewart Spence, a former Royal Aberdeen Golf Club champion and owner of The Marcliffe at Pitfodels Hotel & Spa, Aberdeen.
The deadline for entries is January 15 and should be E-mailed to the Tournament Controller, Colin Farquharson, at colin@scottishgolfview.com
"Stewart Spence has been helping people in golf for as long as I can remember. Muriel Thomson and Paul Lawrie are just two who were given a leg-up by him in their early careers," said Colin.
"What his donation of 2,000 Euros will enable us to do for the Hacienda del Alamo Festival is to guarantee a minimum first prize of 500 Euros for the professionals in each of the four individual events.
"Billy Sim and I devised this warm-weather, mid-winter festival to give both lady professionals and amateurs alike the chance to really get down to serious golf practice at the best facilities in Spain at a time of year when it will probably be too cold to get out and about if they stay at home in Britain & Ireland or anywhere else in northern Europe.
"The amateurs have responded well but I have to admit I am disappointed by the professionals' very limited response. Stewart Spence's gesture may help us boost the professional numbers before the entry deadline next Tuesday."
Billy Sim is convinced that the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival is going to take off in popularity and numbers - both professional and amateur - in years to come. Preferential treatment will be given to those who take part in the inaugural tournament.

Britain's No 1 tennis player Andy Murray from Dunblane wants to have two coaches, two trainers and two physios on Team Murray.

DATE FOR HACIENDA DEL ALAMO
WOMEN'S FESTIVAL ENTRIES

Director of Golf Billy Sim - a son of the North-east of Scotland - has fixed the closing date for entries to the inaugural Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival at the five-star golf resort in the Murcia region of southern Spain from February 10 to 23.
The deadline is Monday, January 15. Any entries received by Tournament Controller Colin Farquharson - another son of the North-east - after that date will be too late to get into the two-week, six-competition programme for Lady Professionals and Lady Amateurs (maximum handicap 20).
There is no minimum or maximum age. Ladies/girls do not necessarily need to go for two weeks. One-week entries are acceptable and if cheaper flights are available to you in midweek, you can book in at Hacienda del Alamo during the first midweek and book out the following midweek.
E-mail your entries to colin@scottishgolfview.com, stating whether an amateur or a professional, home club and handicap if an amateur.

Go on. If you are male and reading this, take the golf-playing lady of your life on this unique golfing holiday to a golf resort with excellent practice facilities and the bonus of some low-key, fun competitions.

VICKI JUST OUTSIDE TOP 20 WITH ONE
ROUND TO GO IN CIGNA CLASSIC

Vikki Laing goes into the final round of the Cigna Classic on the US Futures Tour at Gillette Ridge Golf Club, Bloomfield, Connecticut in joint 21st place.
The Musselburgh exile had second-round 75 for a 36-hole tally of four-over-par 148 on a 6,402yd course in testing conditions of a 12mph breeze that gusted up to 21mph. Firm greens would not hold a full approach shot. The temperature was up in the low 80s most of the day.

Vikki is 11 shots behind the three-stroke leader Mollie Fankhauser from Columbus, Ohio. Millie has scored 67 and 70 for 137 to lead from Taylor Leon (Texas) (70-70) and Stephanie Otteson (North Carolina) on 142 (71-71).
Seventy players made the cut on 155 or better.
South Wales amateur Natasha Morgan, spending her summer holidays from Lynn University, Boca Raton in Florida, on the No 2 women's pro circuit in the States, missed out with 78 and 79 for 157.
So too did Brenda McLarnon from Belfast with 83 and 81 for 164.
Polly Willett from London withdrew after an opening round of 79.
Lisa D Mickey (Futures Tour staff writer) writes:
In the second day’s oddest incident, rookie Kailin Downs of Bend, Oregon, was disqualified when she ran out of golf balls.
Downs says she started the round with “seven or eight” Callaway HX Tour balls in her bag, but it was a day in which she “put a whole bunch in the hazards.”
She finally ran out on the seventh hole, which was her 16th, when her errant shot sailed into the woods.
The one-ball rule states that a contestant may borrow a ball from fellow contestants if all are using like brands, but the other two players in Downs’ group were both using Titleist balls.“It’s not the goal to play bad and need more golf balls,” said Downs, who opted to remain with her group as a scorekeeper for the last three holes of the round.
“This was a first.”She had been joint 47th after a first-round 76.
