WEST KILBRIDE SET FOR SCOTTISH

BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The scenic setting of West Kilbride on the Ayrshire coast will be the stage as the Scottish Boys Championship gets the domestic golfing season gets underway in earnest next week (5 – 10 April).

Scotland’s leading 256 junior golfers will battle it out for the prestigious title, won last year by Aberdonian David Law who went on to make history as the first golfer to win the Scottish Boys Championship and Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship in the same year.

There are high hopes of an Ayrshire winner on home soil, with Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald among the favourites to lift the trophy. The 17-year-old is the reigning Scottish Boys Stroke Play Champion and will be looking to emulate Scott Henry (2004-05), Steven Young (1994-95) and John Huggan (1977-78) all of whom achieved the Boys’ Stroke Play and Match Play double.

Another Ayrshire club, Troon Welbeck – home of 2008 winner Michael Stewart - will also harbour ambitions of glory, with no fewer than eight representatives in the field, more than any other club while Glasgow club Williamwood and Craigielaw in East Lothian are the next highest ranked with five junior members apiece. A total of 141 clubs are represented.

Deeside’s Jack Scott will go into the Championship full of confidence after his win in the opening SGU Junior Tour event of the season, as will young Borderer Simon Fairbairn (Torwoodlee) following his recent victory in the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions at The Duke’s, St Andrews.

Pollok player Conor O’Neil, a member of the Scottish Golf Academy (West), is the lowest handicap player in the field at +1.9 and will rate his chances of victory in the opening ‘Major’ of the season, while Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest – winner of the firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys U16s Championship last year – and Scott Gibson (Southerness), fresh from playing for Scotland’s Men’s team in South Africa, will be among the other players to look out for.

West Kilbride celebrates its tenth hosting of the Championship and SGU Championship Manager Euan Mordaunt is relishing a return to the picturesque venue:

“There’s always a great buzz leading up to the first major event of the domestic season and after a long hard winter I think there’s even more anticipation this year. West Kilbride is a fantastic venue with stunning views across to Arran and a warm welcome for everyone who visits the club.”

“This year’s Championship will be hotly contested with some great talent emerging through our junior ranks and several national champions at age group level in a very strong field. The course will be a testing but fair challenge and I’m sure we’ll have a very worthy champion come next Saturday.”

The handicap ballot fell at 5.4 with 32 players on the reserve list. A results service will be available on http://www.scottishgolf.org/ with live scoring during the latter stages of the Championship. The first match gets underway at 6.45am on Monday 5 April with the 36-hole final commencing at 8.30am on Saturday 10 April.

Great Scott! Deeside's Jack wins at Monifieth

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Deeside’s Jack Scott got his season off to a flyer with a two-shot victory in the opening SGU Junior Tour event of the year at a cold and windy Monifieth.
The Scottish Boys Development Squad golfer fired rounds of 71 and 70 to post a one-under par aggregate of 141 to finish two shots clear of a group of five players – Eamon Bradley (Mount Ellen), Paul McPhee (King James VI), Conor O’Neil (Pollok), Ian Redford (St Andrews New) and Callum Stewart (Brora).
Despite opening his first round with a birdie three, Scott struggled to an outward half of 40, but notched five birdies on the back nine to storm home in 31, four-under par. That put the 17-year-old in joint first place with Stewart, Redford and Falkirk Tryst’s Jamie Lynch.
Scott fought back from two early bogeys to reach the turn in level par in the afternoon round and a closing birdie four for a one-under par round of 70 clinched victory, much to his delight:
“It’s great start to the season for me and puts me in good shape for the year ahead. It’s obviously been a harsh winter but I used the Squad Training Week in Portugal to good advantage and sharpened up my short game.” said Scott.
“I didn’t play all that well in the Boys Quads in France but since I got back I’ve been working hard with my coach Neil Marr two or three times a week just putting and chipping which has helped. I’ve made a couple of technical changes to my putting and it seems to be bearing fruit.”
“Now I can really look forward to the Scottish Boys at West Kilbride and believe I can win if I take it game by game. The furthest I’ve been was the last 16 at Southerness and I’d love to improve on that. This is my last year in the boys’ circuit and the British Boys in August – my last major boys' event – is also another goal.” he added.
Round off the day came from Mount Ellen’s Eamon Bradley – whose brother Paul won the Scottish Club Handicap Championship last year – who fired a superb three-under par 68 in the afternoon, which included four consecutive birdies from the sixth hole.

Ewan Scott captain of SGU Under-16s for Netherlands

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
St Andrews starlet Ewan Scott will captain Scotland’s Under-16s boys team at next month’s Boys Quadrangular Development Series against Holland, Ireland and Wales in The Netherlands from April 13 to 15.
The 14-year-old, who last summer became the first Scot to win the English Boys U14s Championship, recently finished second in the Scottish Golf Academy Winter Series Order of Merit and has been rewarded with the captain’s armband in a team of eight.
Thornhill’s Greig Marchbank, who pipped Scott to win the Winter Series title at the weekend, is also included alongside Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie), who won the Loretto School Scottish Boys U14s Championship at Largs in July and Alva’s Lawrence Allan, winner of the opening Academy winter event.
Peebles have two representatives in the team, with 15-year-olds Craig Howie and Daniel Flannery – fourth and sixth respectively in the Winter Series – included, with the Lothians duo of Callum Hill (Tantallon) and Anthony Blaney (Liberton) also featuring in the line-up.
The event is still in its infancy, having been first piloted at Forrester Park in Fife three years ago, with the Scots defending the title they won in Wales last year. The team has been selected based on the top six in the Winter Series, with two additional picks by the selectors.
National Junior Coach Spencer Henderson said:
“The Boys Quadrangular Development Series gives our younger players the experience of playing for their country against some of the leading youngsters from other European countries and the chance to prove themselves in a highly competitive environment.”
“Our new Junior Winter Series has been hugely beneficial in identifying young players and in fact the top eight in the rankings have all been selected, including four from our Boys Development Squad. We have a strong team with some good experience in competing at a high level for their age group, with two national champions in Ewan and Bradley, so we are confident of performing well again.” he added.
The side players will be accompanied by Scottish Golf Academy Coach Neil Marr and Team Manager Walter McLean.

Quadrangular tie-breaker rules make Italy champions

Beaten Scots pipped for boys' title

Scotland lost their final match narrowly (5-4) to Italy - their first defeat over the three days -
and, despite having a superior "goal difference" - were also pipped by the Italians for the boys' quadrangular title at Chiberta Golf Club, Biarritz, in southwest France today.
Scotland and Italy both finished with two wins and one defeat. In most competitions, the Scots would have won the title on the countback of individual games won-lost. The Scots finished +4 in this respect (15 1/2-11 1/2) while Italy were -2 (11 1/2-13 1/2).
But under the rules of the quadrangular tournament, in the event of a tie, the result in the match between the two teams who have the same number of points is the tie-breaker. So Italy, having shattered the teenage Scots' 100 per cent record, scored a double whammy. Their win also gave them the title.
Hard luck on the Under-18 Scots. So near, yet so far. For Italy it represented a tremendous comeback from a 6-1 defeat by Sweden on Day 2.
In the other match of the closing programme, the host nation, France, found their form too late, beating Sweden 7-2 for their only win.
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), the reigning Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship, was the top points scorer for manager Stuart Wilson's squad. Jack won twice today, giving him a final record of five wins from six games.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), the Scottish Under-16 champion, was Scotland's second most successful performer with 4 1/2 pt, just ahead of Calum Stewart (Brora) who had four wins out of six.
Ian Redford (St Andrews New) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) collected 3pt apiece while Jack Scott (Deeside) gained a 1/2pt

Stuart Wilson to skipper

Scotland boys in Biarritz

quadrangular

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Former Amateur Champion and Open Silver Medallist Stuart Wilson will pass on his knowledge to Scotland’s next generation of golfers when he leads a team of six to the annual Boys Quadrangular match in France next month (March 4 to 6).
Editor's note: Stuart Wilson is the secretary of Forfar Golf Club. Pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency at work.
Wilson, who shot to fame in 2004 with a win at St Andrews in the Amateur Championship before playing clinching the leading amateur prize in the Open at Royal Troon later that summer, has taken a step back from the competitive scene in recent years and the Scottish Golf Union have called on his experience to work with the Boys Development Squad this year.
A strong team of six have been selected for the first international outing of the season at the Chiberta Golf Club in Biarritz, with Scottish Boys Stroke Play Champion Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock, Barassie) and European Young Masters runner-up Calum Stewart (Brora) in the side. They are joined by former and reigning Scottish Boys U16s champions Ian Redford (New Club, St Andrews) and Grant Forrest (Craigielaw).
Jack Scott (Deeside) and Scott Gibson (Southerness), who boasted an impressive three wins out of three as a foursomes pairing in last year’s Boys’ Home Internationals, complete the line-up.
National junior coach Spencer Henderson welcomed Wilson’s appointment as non playing captain:
“It will be great having Stuart on board this season and he’ll be with us for this event as well as the European Boys Team Championship and Boys’ Home Internationals later this year. Stuart knows what it takes to compete at the highest level of amateur golf and his knowledge will be invaluable.”
“We have selected a strong team from a good group of youngsters and the players will certainly benefit from having Stuart around to pass on his advice. The Boys Quadrangular is a great event from a preparation point of view and it puts the players up against some of the top juniors in Europe.”
Scotland has won two out of the last four Quadrangular Match series, with Ross Kellett, James Byrne and David Law among the victorious players from recent outings who have progressed well onto the senior stage. The Scots will be up against Italy, Sweden and host nation France.

SGU chooses Glasgow agency as marketing partner

NEWS RELEASE
The Scottish Golf Union has selected a Glasgow-based creative agency as its marketing partner as it seeks to increase its communication with golf clubs, existing club members and potential club members.
Merchant Soul won the competitive tender to be selected as the SGU’s partner agency against some of Scotland’s bigger, more established agencies and will commence work on its initial project of a national membership recruitment and retention marketing campaign.
Ross Duncan, Marketing & Sponsorship Manager at the Scottish Golf Union, commented: “We are always seeking to develop the quality of communications and support we offer our member clubs in order to help them prosper as individual businesses in their own right.
"The current climate only serves to increase the importance of conveying the true value of a golf club membership to both existing and potential members as well as increasing the level of the help and support we can offer to clubs across a variety of areas.
"Merchant Soul displayed a real understanding of the issues facing the golf industry as a whole and in Scotland specifically and we are sure that they will help us to continue to support our member clubs and by extension, over 250,000 golfers across Scotland.”
Ross McDonald, Account Director at Merchant Soul, said: “Both professionally and personally - as a keen golfer and golf club member for over 12 years - I’m delighted to be appointed to this prestigious account. Our experience, both in the strategic and the creative, means I am confident we will be able to help the Scottish Golf Union support their member clubs and communicate to the market the benefits and value of being a member of a Scottish golf club.
*The Scottish Golf Union (SGU) is the governing body for male amateur golf in Scotland, representing the interests of more than 600 affiliated clubs encompassing around 250,000 golf club members.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The Gullane No 1 course in East Lothian tops the list of venues for the Scottish Golf Union’s 2010 schedule when it hosts the Allied Surveyors Scottish amateur championship in July next year.
Six years on from George Murray’s dramatic victory over Paul O’Hara when the venue last hosted the country’s leading 256 amateur golfers, the recently extended Gullane course will provide the venue for the SGU’s flagship championship from Monday, July 26th to Saturday, 31st.
The domestic season gets underway in earnest with the Scottish boys' championship at the scenic West Kilbride course (April 5-10) while Ayrshire hosts another ‘Major’ the following month when the Scottish men's open amateur stroke-play championship returns to Glasgow Gailes (May 28-30).
East Lothian will also be host to some of the leading junior golfers from the UK and overseas when the Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship takes place at Craigielaw (July 23-25) while Peebles in the Borders is the venue for the Scottish boys' area team championship for a third time (June 6).
The Scottish Seniors Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship moves to a new date in the schedule (30 June – 2 July) with Pollok on the south side of Glasgow providing a great setting for the country’s veterans, many of whom will be battling for a place in the Senior Home Internationals side which the SGU will host at Crail (14 – 16 September). The Golf Data Lab Scottish Youths (Under 21s) Championship also moves to a new date of 7 – 9 May with the event being staged at Monifieth.
Auchterarder will be the scene of both the firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys U16s Open Championship (6 – 8 July) and the Loretto School sponsored Scottish Boys & Girls U14s Open Championship (9 July). Fortrose & Rosemarkie will be the SGU’s most northerly venue in 2010 when it stages the Scottish Club Championship (26 September) with East Renfrewshire playing host to the Scottish Mid-Amateur (Over 25’s) Open Championship (12 – 14 June).
Euan Mordaunt, SGU Events Manager, said:
“We have some fantastic venues for Scotland’s amateur golfers to look forward to in 2010 and we are very excited about the quality of golf courses lined up for our championships in the season ahead.
“There have been some significant changes on Gullane No 1 with a new eighth hole and several new tees and it will provide a great challenge for competitors playing in our flagship event. The SGU is very grateful to all the clubs who host us throughout the year and indeed the members who give up their courses.”
“These great venues allow us to develop talent through our championships and hopefully we’ll see some good crowds turn out locally to support the players.” he added.
Details of a new date, venue and revised format for the Scottish Area Team Championship will be announced early in the New Year. Entry forms for all national championships will be available to download from www.scottishgolf.org.

England send Jonathan Bell to Junior

Orange Bowl in Florida late December

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Boy international Jonathan Bell will look to make it a happy New Year by becoming only the second English player to lift the title when he represents the English Golf Union in the annual Junior Orange Bowl in Florida at the end of the month.
Ben Parker, now a professional, won the event in 2005 while Stiggy Hodgson was runner-up a year ago. But no other English player has managed to win the prestigious American tournament which will be played at its regular venue of the Biltmore Golf Club in Florida from December 27 to 30.
Bell, 18, is a former Under-16 cap who has represented England on a regular basis for the past two years and also played for GB&I in the Jacques Leglise Trophy at Ganton a few months ago. The Kent-based teenager from the Royal Blackheath club has also been successful in individual events for the past six years. He was the English Under-14 champion in 2004 at the age of 12 and finished runner-up and third in the Douglas Johns Trophy in the following two years.
He enjoyed a highly successful 2008 winning the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the South East Junior Championship, was third in the Fairhaven Trophy as well as being a member of the four-strong winning England team in the Honda Junior Championship in Japan.
In 2009, Bell has finished runner-up in the Lee Westwood Trophy, fourth when defending the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters title, and fourth in the Lagonda Trophy while he was also a member of England's victorious boys' home Internationals team.
Recently, he won the Under-18 title in the Faldo Series Grand Final in Brazil. The Orange Bowl, one of the most prestigious Under-18 events in the world, has separate boys and girls tournaments played over 72 holes of stroke play.

Presentation at the North District agm: left to right - Donnie Godsman, Jim Fallon (championship convener), Rodger Clark, Calum Stewart, Alister Paterson (junior convener), Gordon Hay.

Tain's Ian Ross double presidency role until January

By ROBIN WILSON
At the annual general meeting of the North District of the Scottish Golf Union, current President of the Scottish Golf Union, Ian H. Ross (Tain) took on the dual role of SGU President and that of the North District until January 2010. In January his term with the SGU will end.
After two years as the North's vice-president Ian Ross follows James Fraser of Fortrose & Rosemarkie as North president for the next two years.
In his opening remarks to the delegates in attendance at his final meeting in charge of the North, outgoing president James Fraser paid tribute to three former North officials who sadly passed away in the last couple of months, the district's honorary president, an honorary vice- president and a former secretary.
The funeral service of Dr John Grant of Royal Dornoch, who was the North District's first President, was held in the Dornoch Cathedral on Monday, October 12. He was elected the North's first President in 1994, having had connections with the North District stretching back to the 1960s as a member of The Nairn Golf Club, Orkney Golf Club and of course his home club, Royal Dornoch where he was their president.
After failing health over the previous year, the death of Denis le-M. Mackay, a past president and honorary vice-president rocked the North and within a few weeks the executive had lost another serving stalwart, George Thomson (Inverness) who had voluntarily filled the role of secretary during his spell as secretary of Inverness Golf Club and after giving his post had remained on the Executive Committee where he gave much of his time to the junior coaching programme and course rating.
With the approval of all in attendance honorary vice-president Bill Templeton (Abernethy) was elected the new honorary president.
It was from this point that the retiring president turned to the North's juniors expressing his delight at their success during his final year in office. He thanked all the players and the parents for the encouragement and support given to their talented sons and the success they enjoyed during the season.
It was the North's juniors best ever year, winning three trophies at Youth, Under-18, and Under-16 level and topping them all were the four boys who became the North's first winners of the Scottish boys' area team championship in June at Ballumbie Castle: Kyle Godsman (Hopeman), Rodger Clarke (Moray), Gavin Hay (Grantown on Spey) and Calum Stewart (Brora).

English Golf Union release dates, venues for 2010

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
The English men's amateur championship will head to one of its most northerly outposts when it is played at Silloth-on-Solway in London Olympics year, 2012.
Also in the 2012 fixtures just released, Walton Heath will be the venue for the Brabazon Trophy while the Men’s County Finals will be staged at Beau Desert.
Silloth-on-Solway in Cumbria proved a testing venue for the Logan Trophy (Mid-Amateur Championship) in July when the host club’s John Longcake proved a worthy winner. This wasn’t the English Golf Union’s (EGU) first visit to the club. The Men’s County Finals were staged there in 1995 when Lancashire triumphed while in 2002 it hosted the annual England v Scotland Under 16 match.
While Silloth will be the main venue, Seascale, venue for the northern region qualifying this year and of the County Finals in 1971, will be the other course hosting the qualifying rounds.
Walton Heath will host the Brabazon Trophy in June, the only previous occasion the popular Surrey club has staged the English Open Stroke Play Championship was in 1968 when (Sir) Michael Bonallack triumphed in a tournament reduced to 54 holes after the second round was abandoned.
However, the EGU has made regular visits to this superb 36-hole venue, the English Amateur being staged there on four occasions, the most recent in 2002 when Yorkshire’s Richard Finch was champion.
The 2012 domestic season will start with the international against France at Royal Mid Surrey on 12th – 13th May, followed, two days later, by the southern qualifying round for the Brabazon Trophy at the same venue. The northern qualifier will take place a week later at Worksop.
The English Seniors will venture into East Anglia for only the second time in its history when the Championship is played over the Suffolk courses of Aldeburgh and Thorpeness from 6th – 8th June, while the Seniors County Finals, the last event of the season, visit Heworth in Gateshead, Co Durham, in early October. The Mid Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy visits a regular venue for EGU events when it is played over the West Course at Saunton in Devon in early July.
As far as the 2012 junior championships are concerned, the Under 16s for the McGregor Trophy head west to Saunton on 17th – 19th July, the Under 18s for the Carris Trophy to Royal Cinque Ports on the Kent coast, while the Under 14s for the Reid Trophy visit Blackwell, near Bromsgrove, in Worcestershire on 7th – 9th August.
The one-day English Schools will also be staged in the Midlands, at Kenilworth in Warwickshire, on 11th July, while the Cotswold Hills in Gloucestershire will be the scene of the Boys' County Finals on 28th – 30th August. Among other venues, the Champion Club will be played at Stoneham, near Southampton, on 15th and 16th September, while the Junior Champion Club returns to its original venue of Woodhall Spa on 25th and 26th August. The County Finals visit Staffordshire for the sixth time, the five previous occasions having been at Little Aston, the most recent in 2000 when Surrey were winners.
But in 2012 Beau Desert, near Cannock, will play host, having been the venue for the Carris Trophy in 2002. As usual, the Gold Medal and County Champions Tournament will be fought out at Woodhall Spa in August and September respectively.
The 2012 English Golf Union fixture list is:
MAY
12-13: England v France-Royal Mid Surrey.
15: Brabazon Trophy Southern Qualifying-Royal Mid Surrey.

Cardross boys win McIntyre League

for second time in three years

For the second time in three years the Cardross Golf Club juniors (pictured below) have won the McIntyre League, played for by golf clubs in the area. With only two boys from the winning team two years ago playing in this year's team, the whole squad provided evidence of the ability and strength in depth the village side has where the junior section forms an important section of the club.
Gavin Foubister and Ian Stewart were the two juniors to feature in both league wins and their experience was crucial to guide the younger players, such as Cameron Black who was only 10 years old when the first game was played, to this year's league trimuph.
First up was a home game against Helensburgh and a 5 1/2- 1/2 victory gave the boys confidence that good times were ahead. This was followed by another home win, this time by 4 1/2- 1 1/2 against Clydebank and District.
Two away games then followed against Overton and Vale of Leven where two wins, dropping only one halved match, set up another away game against Dumbarton. This game was tighter and in the end the Cardross juniors came away with a 4-2 victory.
The final game was at home to Clober and a 5 1/2-1/2 win, which saw them go through the league with an unbeaten record, was the icing on the cake.
The boys were photographed after the league junior presentation day for all the league teams which by coincidence was held at Cardross this year. In the medal round played for by all of the teams Gavin Foubister carded the lowest scratch with a 74 to edge out Liam Chambers.

Photograph below: Back row - Colin Cameron, Liam Chambers, Gavin Foubister,Alasdair Hughes - Hughes, Front row - Cameron Black, Liam Halliday. Missing from the photograph were Ian Stewart, Cameron Farrell, Jordan Stewart and Lee Gibson all of whom played their part in winning the league.

Craigielaw wins Scottish Junior Team Final

For the third time in four years, Craigielaw Golf Club's junior team has won the Scottish final of the Junior Team Golf Home Nations Inter-club Championship.
This year's event took place at Westerwood Golf Resort. Twelve teams representing junior leagues throughout Scotland took part and the East Lothian League team pipped Cardross for the title and will represent Scotland in the Home Nations Final in Spain in early January.
Team captain Greg Smail, in accepting the trophy from well-known golf commentator Alex Hay, paid tribute to team manager Gordon Smith who has guided Craigielaw to three British finals; his team just coming up short of winning the overall title on the previous two occasions.
"This is a great competition for our junior team members" said Smail in accepting the trophy. "It really develops our junior members, some of whom are already in area and national squads, and gives our younger members something to aim for."
Alex Hay who, along with Sir Steve Redgrave, are patrons of the annual competition, praised the competitors for the high standard of competition and sportsmanship shown and thanked Brian Whittle of TalentNation who are the event's new sponsors.

Craigielaw's winning team were Greg Smail (capt), Douglas Maxwell, Grant Forrest, Ewan Donaldson, Jack Dow, Gabrielle McDonald and Ewan Mackay.

Calling all North-east Golf Clubs

Message from district secretary
George Young

The North-east District have recently sent out letters and forms to all golf lubs in our area, requesting information on all their junior members in order that we can make up a data base of juniors in the North-east.
The lists will enable us to identify promising youngsters worthy of additional coaching and possible candidates for district boys' teams at Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 levels.
It is vitally important that clubs return these census forms as soon as possible as failure to do so may result in their juniors missing out on coaching and/or representative matches.
We have been chasing up clubs to give us their returns and in many cases when we have contacted the junior conveners they haven't seen the original documentation.

Three share inaugural English junior county

champions' hours at three-under-par 143

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
The inaugural (English) Junior County Champions Tournament resulted in a three-way tie at Woodhall Spa between Jay Beisser from Essex, Suffolk’s Alastair Hall and James Burnett, the local lad from Lincolnshire.
All three finished on 143, three under par, Beisser after a closing 69, Hall with 71 and Burnett 75 and by the rules of the competition share the title. Beisser was the first to post the target, his 69 containing eight birdies but also four dropped shots, all this after a magnificent start with five birdies in the first six holes.
“I got off to a flying start and had three successive threes from the first,” he said. “I had a lesson with my coach David Brooks last week to check up on things and I played terrible yesterday with my 74. But it came good today and this tops off a very good season for me. I played solid today but it was a pity I three-putted the 17th, which has proved costly.”
Hall, a double title winner in Suffolk, had three birdies in his 71 after starting with 11 successive pars. "I'm quite pleased to have won," he said modestly.
"I didn't know the situation out on the course but I knew it was close. I didn't know Jay had shot four under but this will be my fifth title of the year so it's been quite successful. I checked and with yesterday’s round I played 29 holes without a bogey,” said Hall.
“Then I bogeyed the 15th today but managed to finish with a birdie.” Burnett, who led by one overnight, in contrast to Beisser made an awful start with three bogeys in the first five holes. “But I managed to steady the ship with a birdie at the sixth and came back in level par,” he said. “It’s nice to finally win a national title.”
The trio finished two strokes ahead of Sam Young from Yorkshire, who returned 76, and four clear of Wiltshire’s Ben Stow, who shot 71.
Final scores and more information on the Junior County Champions event can be found on the EGU website, www.englishgolfunion.org.

Ayrshire Junior League finals at West Kilbride

FROM THE AYRSHIRE GOLF WEBSITE
The first three of the four finals of the 2009 Ayrshire Junior Golf League competitions were held at West Kilbride Golf Club in glorious weather on a course presented in the best of condition.
In the CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TROPHY final, Scott Brown (Turnberry), the former Ayrshire Boys Matchplay & Strokeplay Champion and reigning Ayrshire Matchplay Champion, took on Adam Foley (Ayr Belleisle), a former finalist in the Ayrshire Boys Matchplay Championship.
The final was highly competitive throughout and by the turn Scott Brown had forged a two hole lead. Despite his best efforts, Adam Foley found it difficult to make inroads in the inward nine against probably the best performing young player in the county over the last year, and Scott Brown finished with a flourish to win the trophy by 6 & 4.
The WALLACE THORNTON TROPHY final was between Troon Welbeck and Irvine Ravenspark. Welbeck were looking to win the trophy for the third time, although their previous triumphs had been as far back as 1983 and 1992, whilst Ravenspark were bidding for their first win in the event.
Welbeck started as favourites with Ayrshire boys' match-play champion David Wilson and former finalist Marc Smith in the team, alongside Sam Findlater and Charlie MacNeal, whilst the Ravenspark team, weakened by two of the regular team members being unavailable, comprised Ally Berry, Greg Cathie, Brad Cathie and Chris Hobson.
Welbeck did not have everything their own way however and at the turn in the matches Welbeck lead in three and were behind in one. Ravenspark fought to reduce the defecit but the stronger Welbeck team eventually ran out winners by 4 - 0.
In the UNDER 16 KNOCKOUT TROPHY competition, Kilmarnock (Barassie) and Ardeer looked well matched and so it proved as the match got under way.
By the turn, Kilmarnock Barassie, represented by Daniel McBride, Colin Currie, Blair Gavin and Euan Henderson, had forged a 3 - 1 lead in the ties against the Ardeer team of Robbie Fitzpatrick, Daniel Forbes, Sandy Walker and Nick Carr.
Ardeer fought back however and by the time the last tie had reached the 16th hole Kilmasrnock Barassie had won two ties and Ardeer had won one, whilst the remaining tie was all square.
With Ardeer sure to win on countback in the event of a 2 - 2 draw the final match was crucial. At the 17th hole both players were short on the green in two leaving both players to chip on.
Sandy Walker from Ardeer finished slightly closer in three than Blair Gavin of Barassie, but to the credit of the Barassie boy, he holed a good putt for a four to pile the pressure on his opponent and Sandy Walker's putt for a half, despite looking good, cruely lipped out and stayed above ground to leave Blair gavin one hole up with one to play and effectively giving Barassie at least the half match they required to win the trophy.
Blair Gavin held on to his slim advantage at the last for a final 3 - 1 score in the final in favour of Kilmarnock (Barassie).
Ian McKay (West Kilbride), the Ayrshire Junior Golf League chairman, presented the trophies to the winners at the conclusion of the finals and all the contestants enjoyed a buffet and drinks kindly provided by the host club, to round off a fine day. Scott Brown drew matters to a close by proposing a vote of thanks to the host club and organisers.
The final of the Ayrshire Junior Golf League Championship takes place at West Kilbride on Sunday (September 20) when the holders Largs take on West Kilbride in a repeat of the 2008 final of the event.

This followed a fourth place in the Carris Trophy and equal seventh in the Fairhaven Trophy. This will be his second transatlantic trip of the year, Campbell being a team-mate of Boys in the Thunderbird International in Arizona. Hatton is a former winner of the BB&O Junior Order of Merit who finished fourth in the Faldo World Series Final in Brazil last year. This year, he finished runner-up in the BB&O Junior Championship and tied sixth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters. The Canadian International Junior Challenge is a nations cup-style event, the best three scores from four each day to count. There are also prizes for the leading individuals. --

Gullane Juniors and Loretto Golf Academy's

thrilling 5-5 tie at breezy Gullane

By Iain McLean
Loretto Golf Academy brought a strong international team, with players from Scotland, Spain, Italy, Germany, England and South Korea, to a breezy Gullane No 1 to play against Gullane Juniors last Sunday.
It was an early experience of Scottish links golf, with testing winds and thick rough, for many of the new arrivals at Loretto led by German internationalist Max Waltz and + 2.8 handicap 14 year old Julie Yang from South Korea.
With a combination of internationalists and talented and fast improving young players on both sides, the match consisted of a mixture of handicap four-balls and foursomes. It was "nip and tuck" all the way coming down to the very last shot:

Michael Williams & Jamie Black bt Max Link & Sami Bouzabia 4 and 3.
Tom Grey & Graham Swan bt Victor Wall-Gremstrup & Giorgio Diezi 3 and 1.
Rachel Watton & Lara Frostwick lost to Lesley Atkins & Laura Alexander 1 hole
Jonny Lauder & Craig Spinks lost to Elena Krause & Hannah Schwabe 6 and 5.
Oliver Ladbrooke & Gregor Wood halved with Pablo Ruiz de Velasco & Finbar Dalton.
Scott Gillies & Gary Brownlie lost to Tim Seifert & Timon Sitte 5 and 3.
Ally Simpson & Greg Houlston halved with Julie Yang & Max Waltz
Peter Legget & Callum Stephen halved with Tom Scott & Andrew Minto
Rory Grey & James Fisher bt Navjosh Dhallu & Nicholas Bringsken 3 and 1.
Alexander Wilson & Duncan McLean halved with Ian McDowall & Tim Huebner.

Tim Huebner chipped in from off the green for a birdie 3 on the 18th to win the hole and salvage a half against Alexander & Duncan to make the final score Gullane 5, Loretto 5.
An excellent result followed by soup, bacon rolls and cake in the Clubhouse.
The Gullane team is looking forward to the return at Craigielaw on 1st November.

GB&I boys step up a gear to win

Jacques Leglise Trophy 14.5-9.5

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
Great Britain and Ireland have won the 2009 Jacques Leglise Trophy Match at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire after defeating the Continent of Europe by 14 ½ points to 9 ½.
Having finished day one only one point ahead of the European team, GB&I found another gear today, winning the morning foursomes by 2 ½ to 1 ½ before dominating the afternoon singles 5 ½ to 2 ½.
For GB&I captain, Paul Dunne, the victory represented an important ambition achieved. A measure of importance that these young players place on the match, Dunne had turned down a place in the Irish men’s team, who played in the Home Internationals at Hillside earlier this week, to compete in the Jacques Leglise.
“It feels great, the boys just played so well. They just took one shot at a time and they kept the ball in play,” explained Dunne.
“I was offered a spot in the (Ireland) men’s team this year but I decided that this was more important to me as I’ve never played for GB&I before. I won’t get any other chances to play this whereas, hopefully, I can play in the full Irish side for many years to come.”
“I was thrilled when I heard that Paul was playing, it was a wonderful gesture,” added GB&I boys' chairman of selectors, Peter McEvoy. “There’s something about Paul Dunne.”
The honour of holing the winning putt went to Max Smith of England, who completed a 4&3 victory over Finland’s Toni Hakula to seal the result.
“It’s brilliant,” said Smith. “It’s been a great event which I’ve enjoyed so much. And it’s fantastic to be a part of the team that’s won.”
“We play a lot of golf on this sort of course so maybe a little bit of experience helped us in being able to keep the ball low and really control our shots. So in that way we might have had a bit of an edge over the Europeans.”
Andreas Pallauf, the Continent of Europe’s non-playing captain, concurred, but felt there was a little but more to it: “I do think they are a bit more used to these conditions,” he said, “but our players maybe didn’t play up to the standard they know they can achieve. They had the potential to win but GB&I were always there. They played beautifully; the short-game especially was where there was a difference.
“On the day, they were better on and around the green than we were.”
But, without exception, all of the 18 boys competing this week exhibited a level of golf in, at times, dreadful conditions that would have not been out of place at a major championship.
“People think you’re exaggerating when you say that their ball striking is comparable to the top professional game,” explained McEvoy, himself a two-time Amateur champion and five-time GB&I Walker Cup competitor. “But it really is. If you stuck any of these lads in the practice ground at a European Tour event, you wouldn’t be able to pick them out.”
Next year’s Jacques Leglise Trophy Match will be held in Italy.
Full match results from both days of the 2009 Jacques Leglise Trophy Match are available on www.randa.org.
Scottishgolfview Editor's note: Paul Shields (Kirkhill), Scotland's only representative in the match, lost his opening-day foursome in partnership with Paul Dunne but won his singles by 4 and 3 against Robin King.
Today, Shields did not play in the foursomes but won his singles tie even more easily, beating Max Rohrig 5 and 4.

He was also runner-up in the Surrey Under 16 Championship and reached the third round of the British Boys.

Renfrewshire held by Ayrshire boys at Eastwood

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
By DON BREMNER
Any faint chance of Renfrewshire Golf Union winning this year’s West of Scotland Inter Counties Boys League disappeared at a wet and windy Eastwood where the Ayrshire boys were the visitors. The result was a 4-4 draw.
In the first game, Elderslie’s Alastair McDougall (14) had to face Scott Johnston, who had just won his club’s senior championship at age 15, and lost 3 and 2.
Then Andrew Cunningham from Ranfurly Castle evened the score with a comfortable 5 and 4 victory.
His clubmate, Josh Bogle then gave hope for a team victory winning 3 and 2 and the last of the Under-16s, Stewart Watt from Ranfurly Castle, had a fine one-hole victory over Ross Drain who had felt confident at the turn when he was five up. A miraculous turn around for Stewart.
In the 16 to 18 years games, neither Michael McLellan or Calum Gallacher could cope with their opposition and this left the match victory in the hands of Alex Ferguson (Paisley) and local boy, Lewis Cullen.
With home course advantage, Lewis was always in control and his 3 and 2 victory over Fraser Kerr meant that Renfrewshire could not lose the tie. However, full points were needed and a late surge by Ayrshire’s Sam Findlater saw a one hole lead held by Alex turn into a 2 and 1 loss. The points were shared and Renfrewshire will have to wait until next year.

England field two new caps in Under-16

match against Spain at Heswall

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH GOLF UNION
England will field two new caps – Oliver Carr (Heswall, Cheshire) and Max Orrin (North Foreland, Kent) in their four-strong team to face Spain in the annual Under 16 international at Heswall on August 25.
The two other members of the team will be Sebastian Crookall-Nixon (Workington, Cumbria) and Harry Casey (Enfield, Middlesex).
Carr, 16, a former Cheshire junior champion, played in the winning Nations Cup team in the McGregor Trophy at Radcliffe-on-Trent and represented the English Golf Union in the recent Harder German Junior Masters, finishing tied 14th.
Orrin, 15, from Kent, was prominent in the McGregor Trophy, being joint leader at halfway and finishing just a shot out of the five-man play-off. He has shown consistent results this year including victory in the South of England boys' championship, runner-up in the Douglas Johns Trophy, fifth in the Kent Youths and sixth place in the English Under-16 Schools Championship. Crookall-Nixon, 15, has been English Under-16 Champion for the past two years, retaining the title in the five-man playoff at Radcliffe-on-Trent and was a member of the winning Nations Cup team. He made his international debut in last year’s Under 16 match against Spain and also played against Scotland and Ireland.
He also earned his first boys cap in this month’s boys' home internationals at Hankley Common, winning three of his five matches. Casey, 16, won his first Under 16 cap against Spain last year, is the current Middlesex Under 16 Champion and a former winner of the Douglas Johns Trophy. He also represented the EGU in the Harder German Junior Masters and was a member of the Nations Cup team that finished joint runners-up in the McGregor Trophy.

Surrey win English boys' county title

for third year in a row

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Surrey are English boys county champions again. They collected their third successive title when they beat Gloucestershire 5-3 with one match halved on an extremely windy afternoon at Whittington Heath.
Their victory completed a clean sweep of the other three regional county champions and leaves them at the pinnacle of boys’ golf. Their captain Terry Casey was naturally delighted at seeing his side completed their mission of a title hat-trick.
“This is an unbelievable feeling to have won again,” he said. “It’s a fantastic effort but this is such a good bunch of lads but I seem to say that every year. It’s all about team work. Josh White is such a great captain and I cannot believe how we come up with such an unbelievable bunch of kids each year.”
So what is the secret of Surrey’s success? “We don’t even know if there is a secret,” he added. “It’s about a lot of hard work by a team of people which starts with the committee and we have the best coach which creates a good foundation so the kids just want to play. Of course, winning becomes a habit and we have five of this team who will be available next year. I thought this would be our lean year but I was wrong.”
Gloucester captain Mark Powell said: “We got extremely close and I’m proud of my team. This is the furthest Gloucester have got in the championship and I felt we had a good chance of beating Surrey. We halved the singles when we played them in a friendly in March without our two England boys. But it wasn’t to be.”
After edging the morning foursomes 2-1, Surrey needed a fast start in the singles and they got it from Ben Taylor, who beat Sam Payne 6 and 5, plus an exemplary display from Curtis Griffiths in defeating Laurie Potter 3 and 2.
England boy cap Chris Lloyd lost the opening hole to the promising left-hander Greg Payne but struck back with five 3s in the next six holes to race four-up on his way to a 5 and 4 win. But Surrey were not to be denied and although Tyler Hogarty gained another point for Gloucester, Surrey were seen home with a half from Matthew Chapman against boy cap Adam Carson while skipper Josh White rounded it all off with a two hole victory over Sam Sullivan.
In the contest for third place, Lancashire beat Worcestershire 6-3 after taking two of the foursomes to leave the Midland Champions with the wooden spoon. After lunch, Lancashire came out with all guns blazing, taking the top two singles through Jack Brooks, 4 and 2 over Chris Nugent, and by 6 and 4 by Anthony Stirling against Rob Aldred.
Stirling was particularly impressive, the Formby lad claiming seven birdies and 21 putts in the 14 holes played. That put Lancashire within sight of victory and they cantered home with further wins from Mark Duncalf and James Bolton. GB&I TEAM OF NINE ANNOUNCED FOR
JACQUES LEGLISE
TROPHY MATCH

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R&A
The Great Britain and Ireland team to contest the 2009 Jacques Leglise Trophy match has been announced. The nine players to face the Continent of Europe at Ganton Golf Club near Scarborough, England, are as follows:
Paul Dunne – Captain (Greystones, Ireland)
Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath, England)
Adam Carson (Long Ashton, England)
Sebastian Crookall-Nixon (Workington, England)
Tom Lewis (Welwyn Garden City, England)
Chris Lloyd (The Kendleshire, England)
Eddie Pepperell (Drayton Park, England)
Paul Shields (Kirkhill, Scotland) (pictured)
Max Smith (Newbury Racecourse, England)
======
Peter McEvoy – Boys Chairman of Selectors

Attention will undoubtedly focus on Tom Lewis, the 18-year-old from Welwyn Garden City who won last week’s Boys Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club. Lewis defeated his GB&I team-mate Eddie Pepperell in the final of the Championship just over a week after winning five points out of a possible six for England at the Boys Home Internationals.
On the opposing side will be the two previous winners of the Boys Amateur Championship, Pedro Figueiredo (2008) and Emilio Cuartero (2007), as well as Maximilian Röhrig, who lost in the semi-final to Lewis at Sandwich.
“We have selected a very strong team for what will be a closely-fought match,” said Boys Chairman of Selectors, Peter McEvoy. “The profile of Boys golf could not be higher at the moment with the likes of 16-year-old Matteo Manassero and 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa excelling on the world stage. The standard of play is so high now that it is not surprising that 18-year-olds are finding success at full professional level.”
The Jacques Leglise Trophy will be held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August. Scores and reports will appear on RandA.org throughout the days of competition.
Continent of Europe Team
Maximilian Röhrig (Germany); Emilio Cuartero (Spain); Kasper Sorensen (Denmark); Toni Hakula (Finland); Robin Kind (Netherlands); Moritz Lampert (Germany); Pedro Figueiredo (Portugal); Lucas Bjerregaard (Denmark); Romain Wattel (France).
Non-playing Captain – Andreas Pallauf (Austria)
