Rory McIlroy voted Ireland's "Professional of 2009"

Rory McIlroy has been voted the Professional of the Year for 2009 by the Irish Golf Writers’ Association. The Awards evening, sponsored by AIB Bank, took place in the AIB Bankcentre in Dublin.
The 20 year old from Holywood, Co. Down, not only broke into the world’s top ten last year, but claimed his maiden European Tour title – at the Dubai Desert Classic in February – and notched 14 top ten finishes, including third place at the US PGA Championship. He finished second to Lee Westwood in The Race to Dubai, having claimed third place at the season-ending Dubai World Championship presented by: DP World.
Shane Lowry, who burst onto the scene in May when he won the 3 Irish Open shortly before turning professional, was voted the Men’s Amateur of the Year. Lowry, 22, was only the third amateur to win a European Tour event, triumphing in a play-off with Robert Rock.
The highlight of Lowry’s impressive amateur career was leading Ireland to back-to-back European Championships during the past two seasons.
Women’s Amateur of the Year went to Lisa Maguire, who won the Lancome Irish Close and the 3 Irish Women’s Amateur Open. Maguire also helped Ireland to an historic victory in the European Girls’ Team Championship, playing alongside her sister Leona and Laura McCarthy to beat Sweden 4-1 in the final.
In a magnificent year for Irish women’s amateur golf, two big individual wins were scored on Scottish links. Leona Maguire captured the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal Troon & Troon Portland while Danielle McVeigh won the British Ladies’ Stroke-play Championship at Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie links.
Albert Lee was given the Distinguished Services to Golf award for his role as Honorary Secretary of the Golfing Union of Ireland. Lee is also a former president of the GUI, the oldest national governing body in the world, and is a member of Mullingar Golf Club.

SCOTS HOPE CATRIONA’S WIN WILL

INSPIRE GIRLS AT FAIRHAVEN

Scotland team officials are hoping that Catriona Matthew’s historic victory at neighbouring Royal Lytham on Sunday will inspire her Under-18 compatriots to win the girls’ home international matches over the next three days.
The Scottish youngsters were given a break from practice on Sunday by captain Margaret MacNaughtan (Aberdeen Ladies) and manager Karen Marshall (Baberton) so that they could cheer on Catriona in the closing stages of her Ricoh Women’s British Open triumph and were thrilled to see her win.
It’s the Scots teenagers’ bad luck that they don’t have a warm-up match before they are the first to face the favourites, Ireland, while defending champions England play Wales..
Ireland are the only one of the four countries who have never won the Stroyan Cup since the girls’ tournament began in 1966.
But, paradoxically, the Irish start favourites this week because they won the European girls’ team championship in Finland, also for the first time, at the beginning of July.
The Ireland line-up includes the 14-year-old identical twins Lisa and Leona Maguire whose level of skill is way above the norm for that age, so much so that they both played for Great Britain & Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy women’s international match against the Continent of Europe in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago.
England are defending the title they won over three very wet days at Panmure Golf Club, near Carnoustie last year.
Scotland were bidding to complete a hat-trick of Stroyan Cup triumphs last year when they finished third behind champions England and runners-up Ireland.
Fairhaven, an Open championship qualifying venue, has probably the toughest start and the toughest finish at any course they have ever played – three of the first four holes from the LGU tees are par-5s and three of the last four holes are par-5s.

Scotland team is;
Lesley Atkins (Minto), Ailsa Bain (Peebles), Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), Sammy Leslie (Westhill), Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Rachael Taylor (Bad Griesbach), Sammy Vass (Tain), Rachael Watton (Mortonhall).

Hong Kong’s Steven Lam, who started the day at two-over-par with a pair of 73s for the first two rounds, dropped three shots to be five over par for the tournament at the turn.
But he had still managed to extend his lead over American 14-year-old Jordan Spieth to three shots. Jordan was eight over par overall at the end of the wind-tossed outward half today.
Miss Moriya Jutanugarn, a 13-year-old from Thailand, was sharing third place on 10 over par with Scotland’s Paul McPhee from Perth and Frederik Hammer (Denmark).

Perth players doing well in

windy R&A Junior Open

Perth’s Paul McPhee, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has moved into a challenging position with one round to go in the R&A Junior Open at Hesketh Golf Club, Southport.
And Scotland’s girl representative, Annabel Niven, who lives in the village of Tibbermore, near Perth, had another good day to be leading the Silver Division with some players still to finish.
On a day when a wild west wind off the sea blew away many unaccustomed to such conditions, including Japanese overnight leader Mami Fukuda, Paul McPhee showed the right spirit in grinding out a one-over-par 73, the joint best score of the day.
“I’m not playing well but you could say I’m ‘battling well,” said the 16-year-old member at the King James VI island club on the River Tay.
“I bogeyed the fifth, sixth and the 13th but I tried to keep my head up, a kind of damage limitation exercise. Then my luck changed when I holed a 30ft putt to birdie the 14th and got another birdie, an ‘ugly’ one, at the 17th where I finished up wedging my third to this par-5 hole and sinking a 10ft putt.
“The funny thing is, that after struggling for so long, I had a chance to match the par of 72 in the end, which would have been good going in that wind. I missed a birdie chance from about 12ft at the last.”
The only players ahead of Paul going into the Gold Division’s final round are Hong Kong’s Steven Lam, who has shot a pair of 73s for 146 and the American 14-year-old Jordan Spieth who slipped from 72 to 76 but is still in the hunt on 148.
Annabel Niven’s five handicap means she is in the Silver Division girls’ category which means she doesn’t get to play a third round. But with a 78 and 75 for 153 she would have been high up the girls’ Gold Division scores.
Consistency has been Annabel’s strong point over the past two days. On Monday she had halves of 39 and yesterday (Tuesday) she was out in 38 and back in 37. The Crieff player birdied the eighth and bogeyed only only the first, fifth, sixth and 15th in testing conditions.

Mami! Mami! Japanese girl's
hopes go west on the wind

A wild west wind blew Japan's Mami Fukuda out of the overall lead on the second day of the R&A Junior Open at Hesketh Golf Club, Southport today.
Mami, bidding to become the first girl ever to beat the boys and win the R&A Junior Open championship trophy over 54 holes in this biennial event, came to grief in the second round. A first-day two-under-par 70, achieved late on Monday evening, had hoisted her two shots clear of the boy leaders but it was a different story today.
Mami, who plays off +2, had an 80 for a 36-hole tally of 150, which even cost her the lead in the girls' category. Miss Fukuda speaks virtually no English but through sign language she got the message across that she did not like playing in the wind whipping in from the sea.
Given that almost all the scores were rising, Mami was not doing too badly at one over par after five holes, having birdied the third and bogeyed the first and fifth, but in an eight-hole stretch from the seventh to the 14th she had a double bogey (at the eighth) and five bogeys. She was able to par the tough finishing stretch, but the damage had been done in halves of 40.
Even American Jordan Spieth from Dallas, well used to playing in high winds in Texas, did not feel in command as he returned a four-over-par 76 - four more than on Monday - for 148 "I'm not blaming the wind," said 14-year-old Jordan, who plays off +4. "It was the putting that killed me today. I just can't read the greens over here in England."
Steven Lam, a 15-year-old scratch golfer from Hong Kong, took up the running with his second 73 for 146.
"I don't mind a wind like this. I play over two courses back home. One is by the sea and the other is on the top of a mountain so you can imagine how windy that can be," said Steven who was four over par after six holes but retrieved the situation with birdies at the eighth, 11th, 16th and 17th.
England's Harry Whittle (Woburn) had a 75 for a creditable 36-hole tally of 151. Harry made life difficult for himself with bogeys at four of the first five holes but he settled to birdie the long seventh and he covered the remaining holes in par with a bogey at the 10th being cancelled out by a birdie at the 12th.

Paul McPhee (right) in the ring of competitors around the 16th green for the opening ceremony of the R&A Junior Open at Hesketh Golf Club, Lancashire. Paul, like all the 108 competitors from 68 countries, received his competitor's badge personally from Padraig Harrington, the defending Open champion this week. Image by Cal Carson Golf Agency, all rights reserved.

McPhee a leading contender for
R&A Junior Open at Hesketh

Winning the R&A Junior Open, held over the next three days (Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) at Hesketh Golf Club, would be a considerable compensation to Paul McPhee for letting the English Under-16s’ title for the McGregor slip through his fingers.
And the 16-year-old Perth Academy pupil, who plays off scratch, certainly has a chance of winning the Under-16’s tournament which has drawn a record field of more than 100 representatives from more than 60 different countries.
Every two years the R&A invites its affiliated national bodies in 120 countries to send a boy and a girl (over 12 years but under 16 on January 1) to play in the Junior Open in which the lower handicappers play 54 holes and the higher ones 36 holes.
McPhee led at the halfway stage of the McGregor Trophy but fell back to fourth place on the final day at High Post, Wiltshire.
Recently, he just missed equalling the course record of 63 at his home club, King James VI, uniquely situated on Moncrieffe Island in the middle of the River Tay at Perth.
McPhee won the Scottish Under-14s title at Deeside in 2006 and one of his main rivals at Hesketh is likely to be England’s Harry Whittle (Woburn), winner of the same title last year.
It is well-nigh impossible to evaluate McPhee’s title prospects at Hesketh. There are quite a few unknown quantities in the field such as Jordan Speith from Dallas, Texas. You would have to fell that the United States Golf Association is not going to send a young man (and a young girl) to such a prestigious occasion just to make up the numbers.
The last two winners of the R&J Junior Open have been from the United States – Patrick Reid at Heswall in 2006 and Jordan Cox at Kilmarnock Barassie in 2004.
Competitors at previous R&A Junior Opens who have gone on to make a name for themselves as professionals include Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy. David Inglis won the British boys' title after he won the R&A Junior Open title and went on to play for a winning GB&I Walker Cup team - although success as a professional has evaded him.
Scotland’s girl representative is Annabel Niven (Crieff) whose older sister Roseanne was the only British or Irish player in the last four of the recent British women’s open amateur championship at North Berwick.
England’s girl is their Under-14 champion, Hannah Marie Turland.
Ireland are represented by Daniel Murphy (Portarlington) and Daryl Conroy (Castlebar).
For Wales, it’s Sam Dix (Ham Manor) and Emma Davies (Eaton).
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington brought the Claret Jug along to the opening ceremony at Hesketh and personally gave medals to each of the 108 competitors from 68 countries.
He told the boys and girls to enjoy themselves over the next three days because it would given them memories they would remember for the rest of their lives.
"These are the happiest days of your lives. Enjoy them," said Padraig. "There wasn't an R&A Junior Open in my day. More's the pity."
For some strange reason, which not even R&A Golf Development officer Alison White can explain, neither Sweden nor France have nominated any representatives. That is par for the course as far as these two countries are concerned. They seem to have their own agenda for junior golf. Which is a pity, particularly, as far as Sweden are concerned, a nation that has just provided the winning team in the European boys’ and European girls’ Under-18 championships.

Scottish U-14 boys' champion is England's
choice for R&A Junior Open at Hesketh

Harry Whittle, a member of the England Under 16 Training Squad, has been selected to represent the EGU in the R&A’s Junior Open at Hesketh Golf Club, near Southport on July 14 to 16.
Whittle sprang to prominence last year when he won the Douglas Johns Trophy as well as the Scottish boys' Under-14 open championship. He also finished tied sixth in the English boys' Under-14 Championship for the Reid Trophy.
These successes almost earned him an Under 16 cap, but he was named as reserve for the Under 16 International with Scotland and later played for the England Under-16 side against the England under 18 girls team. Whittle was named in the England Under-16 Squad this year and will celebrate his 15th birthday four days after the R&A Junior Open.
The Scottish Ladies Golfing Association has already nominated Annabel Niven (Crieff) for the girls' event of the R&A Junior open but the Scottish Golf Union has still to name its representative.

LOCH NESS GOLF CLUB HAS

MONSTER JOB ON ITS HANDS

Loch Ness Golf Club which is part of the Fairways complex on the south side of Inverness has a huge success story that just gets better and better. Their junior golf section now totals over 200 members and nearly 150 are actively involved in the weekly coaching provided by the Club.
From fledgling beginnings when the Club was formed at the same time at the Loch Ness Golf Course was opened merely a dozen years ago in 1996 they have taken the junior membership to epic proportions through regular coaching and competitions with a recognised pathway for each junior golfer to work their way to obtaining a senior handicap and competing against the adults.
Such is the popularity of the work that the club does with children that each year a waiting list starts but the wait isn’t for long as the club devises more ways of including more children in the programme.

Richard Treasurer the Junior Convenor of Loch Ness Golf Club said

“When I took over back in 2000 there were only about 30 juniors playing a handful of medals but I realised that if the club was going to progress and the juniors were to have some benefit of being members then giving them as much coaching as we could was vital.

"In the beginning we started with Martin Piggot, our Head Professional, taking them all once a week but as word started to spread we found ourselves dealing with more and more interested children so we had to move on from one coach and now we have six people giving coaching while we have another half dozen helpers out on the course with the more advanced children.

"Each year we say that this will be our maximum but we capped it at 100, then 150, now 200 and I am sure that if the kids keep coming we will keep coaching them. We have developed a timetable that lets almost all the children come to us each week and they are giving technical coaching by Martin and his staff, putting, chipping, bunker play, rules and etiquette from our amateur coaches and organised medal competitions that allow them to obtain handicaps and win prizes.

"It has been very fulfilling to watch the children grow from raw beginners into some very capable golfers and I hope that they will look back on Loch Ness Golf Club with good memories and in time help coach our next batch of aspiring players.”

Tom Smith, Captain of Loch Ness Golf Club, said “I have nothing but admiration for what Richard and his team have done at the Club. I try to come along every week to help out with the Juniors. It is great to see how keen they all are to get out on the course, and how quickly their play improves. I know there will be other sporting and leisure pursuits open to them in the future but I hope that many of them will be become future Loch Ness Golf Club Men and Ladies members.”

Willie Mackay the Area Development Manager of clubgolf commented “I have watched the junior section at Loch Ness grow over the years and the success that the older boys have in competitions around the Highlands is down to the time and effort that Richard and his team have put in. They are willing to give up their time to help the kids to improve and examples like this should be shown around the country and held up as a model for other clubs to copy.”

Fairways, the home of Loch Ness Golf Club, is a golf and leisure business situated in the south west edge of Inverness. Opened in 1989 it has a host of facilities open to the public 7 days a week including 9 and 18 hole golf courses, lounge bar, restaurant, sports bar, function/conference suite, driving range, golf shop, forest walks and petanque.

Buchanan Castle Golf Club Junior Open Day

clubgolf Press Release

Buchanan Castle Golf Club, which joined forces with the national junior golf programme, clubgolf, this year to encourage children and their families to play golf, is holding an Open Day for juniors this Sunday (30 March) between 11am and 4pm.

Recognising an absence of facilities in the area, the Club, near Drymen, has developed a six-hole course, which it plans to increase to nine, and a dedicated short-game area.

“Over the last season we have created a six hole Academy course, set up for juniors and we will develop another three, so ultimately we will have a nine hole par 3 course with holes from 60 to 240 yards,” said Keith Baxter, the Club’s professional.

“We’ll have a driving range as well this summer and we already have planning permission for covered bays too.

“It will be ideal for the kids and will give them a place they can come and develop their game without being intimidated on a big course. We hope this will create an environment where they can relax and enjoy it, remain playing golf and become full members.”

By joining forces with clubgolf, Mr Baxter can offer young golfers, particularly primary school-aged children who have experienced the programme’s introductory game, firstclubgolf, in school, a golf coaching programme which could take them right up to area coaching level.

This Sunday’s Open Day is an opportunity to welcome children and families, giving them a taste of what the Academy has to offer.

“The Open Day is primarily for children coming through the schools looking to progress, but if people come that are a bit more established or that are complete beginners we will be delighted to see them,” said Mr Baxter.

“We’ve started an Academy membership so children can join the wee course and use the practise facilities and the clubhouse. There’s coaching included in the first year’s membership so we can encourage and educate them.”

For information on Buchanan Castle GC and this weekend’s Open Day please contact the pro shop on Tel: 01360 660330.

Scottish Golf Union Press Release

Six Clubs Short-listed For Junior Awards

Six of Scotland’s golf clubs have been short listed for the final of the inaugural Dunfermline Building Society Junior Club of the Year Awards with the winners to be announced at the Scottish Golf Dinner later this month.
North-east clubs Alford and Inverurie were selected for final nomination, alongside Turnhouse GC from Edinburgh, Greenock Whinhill, Reay Golf Club in the north of Scotland and Ayrshire club, West Kilbride.
Nominations from 50 golf clubs across Scotland were received by the Scottish Golf Union’s judging panel, who were left with the difficult decision of which clubs to leave out.
“The standard of entry has been excellent, demonstrating the high level of commitment many of our clubs have towards encouraging junior participation and growing the game in their communities.” said Andy Salmon, Development Manager for Scottish Golf.
“Whilst we have short listed six golf clubs, all those who were nominated can all be very proud of their efforts and will undoubtedly become the benchmarks for other clubs to follow. All the entries we have received are reflective of the positive attitude Scottish golf has towards youngsters in the game.” he added.
Following the launch of the Awards in December by leading Tour professionals Peter Whiteford and Clare Queen, clubs have been working hard to complete their nominations, based on their efforts to encourage juniors, provide improved facilities, harness links to their local community and develop talent at their club.
Graeme Dalziel, Chief Executive of sponsors Dunfermline Building Society, was delighted to see the Awards prove so popular in their first year:
“We are very proud to sponsor the Junior Club of the Year Awards and support grass roots golf in Scotland. Much of the hard work done by volunteers in our clubs goes unnoticed and these Awards will help recognise the fantastic efforts of so many people.”
“Dunfermline Building Society’s commitment to junior golf in Scotland will hopefully encourage even more youngsters to get involved in golf across our communities and support the great work being done both locally and nationally.”
The judging panel will select the winning club over the next two weeks, with the announcement of the Junior Club of the Year made at the Scottish Golf Dinner on Friday 28 March in Glasgow.
The winning club will be presented with a cheque for £1000 for their junior section, which will be awarded by former European Tour star Dean Robertson alongside Graeme Dalziel. The five-runners up will each receive £300, with all clubs represented by their junior convenors at the event.
Dunfermline Building Society’s Fairway Saver account, which also supports golf clubs in Scotland, has already attracted nearly 2,000 new customers, with £500 given to any club who signs up 50 of their members.

Dunbar Golf Club strengthens commitment to juniors

Dunbar Golf Club is intensifying its efforts to help clubgolf make the
game accessible to every child in Scotland.

Last weekend the Club strengthened its junior coaching team of five by
sending a further two members on the PGA Level 1 volunteer coaching
course hosted by Craigielaw Golf Club, East Lothian.

Emerging out of Scotland's successful bid to host the Ryder Cup,
clubgolf is a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish
Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the
Golf Foundation and sportscotland. The strategy has been developed as
a direct result of the Scottish Executive's commitment to introduce
every nine-year-old child in Scotland to the game by 2009.

Dunbar first began delivering clubgolf in 2006 at Winterfield Golf
Course. Coordinated by East Lothian Council, 27 children signed up for
its Stage 1 coaching course delivered by club member, Dave Northcott
and parent, Scott Turner.

In 2007 the programme moved to Dunbar Golf Club. At the same time the
coaching team expanded to five qualified volunteers coaches, in club
members Joe Gillan, Craig Grant, Wilson Morton, Dave Northcott and
Janet Wake. Assisting them were four other members, Alan Grandison,
Billy Hogg and Iain McKane Sandy Wake.

Between them they coached 34 children, 14 of them girls, through
clubgolf's Stage 1 Year 1 and Year 2 programmes.

With the 2008 golf season just weeks away, Dunbar's coaching programme
is set to grow with support from the Club's new manager, John Archibald.

Four more members have come forward to join its Coaching Team and train
as clubgolf Volunteer Coaches to begin coaching in 2008.

"We estimate 20 Primary 5 children will start clubgolf Stage 1 at
Dunbar Golf Club this May, bringing the total children involved in the
club's programme to around 50," said Kate Green, East Lothian Council's
Golf Coordinator.

"This is a fantastic result for the club and the area."

Sandy Wake was a former volunteer assistant at Dunbar but, by
attending the two-day PGA Level 1 training course, is now equipped to
begin coaching Stage 1.

"The course was superb and very well organised," said Mr Wake, one of
four East Lothian golf club members who attended the course. "I have
never done any formal coaching before now but having been on the course
I'm looking forward to making a start in the spring."

HAWICK GOLF CLUB
DOUBLES JUNIOR
COACHING TEAM

By ROB EYTON JONES
clubgolf MEDIA MANAGER
Hawick Golf Club, which took the lead in introducing the town’s children to golf through the national junior golf strategy, clubgolf, has doubled its volunteer coaching team after two club members attended the PGA Level 1 volunteer coaching course at Craigielaw Golf Club, East Lothian last weekend.
Former club champion Stuart Hunter (on left of picture) and past junior captain Graeme Tinlin (on right of picture), will begin introducing the next generation of Hawick players to golf this spring.
clubgolf - the partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, Professional Golfers’ Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland, developed as a lasting legacy to host the Ryder Cup – was launched in the Borders last April.
Since Burnfoot, Drumlanrig, Hobkirk, Newcastleton, Stirches and Wilton Primary Schools became involved, 207 of the town’s children have experienced clubgolf’s introductory game, firstclubgolf.
Hawick Golf Club has provided the second stage of coaching with real equipment after its junior convenor, David Wilson and fellow club member, Dougie Crawford became qualified to coach Stage 1 of the programme through the PGA Level 1 Volunteers course.
This year, with all of the Hawick’s primary schools providing the introductory game, the numbers of children wishing to develop their golf skills at the club is set to rise.
“We’re delighted to bring on board our latest coaching recruits,” said David Wilson. “Graeme and Stuart have both been involved in the recent running of our Junior section and are very enthusiastic, approachable and respected by our youngsters.”
“This March we will run after school sessions of the firstclubgolf program where we can get all schools involved. This will allow us to sign up the interested kids in April to the coaching program and continue throughout the summer.
“Having two new coaches will allow us to get more kids into the program and with Dougie and myself planning to get the clubgolf Level 2 course and Keith Morgan delivering Level 3 we will have a nice coaching set up in place.”
David and team recently secured sponsorship from Carlisle Golf Centre, which donated 24 pairs of childrens golf boots, and have been pledged 75 golf gloves by tour professional David Drysdale. They are also looking at ways to improve the Club’s junior coaching facilities and are hoping to install an artificial putting green, with a bunker and build a couple of coaching nets.

PRESS RELEASE

Mark Parsonage pictured at Thurso Golf Club's David Lyall indoor coaching facility (Image by Rob Eyton, clubgolf Media Manager).

MARK PARSONAGE (age 12) WINS THURSO GOLF
CLUB MEN'S MEDAL AFTER TWO NEAR-MISSES

Thurso Golf Club junior member 12-year-old Mark Parsonage won the club’s opening men's medal of the year this month, consigning his runner-up positions in the November and December events - both decided on countback - to distant memory.
In what his father, Bob Parsonage, the club’s vice-captain and one of its seven clubgolf Level 1 coaches, describes as “bitterly cold, treacherous conditions with some ice on the fairways and the greens,” Mark finished four ahead of his nearest opponent with a net score of 67.
Thurso has a number of very talented adult members, which makes young Mark's feat even more creditable.
His first medal completed a successful membership year for the youngster who achieved his first handicap (which he has since reduced to 20) and won the club’s Ronnie Williamson Cup. Equally audacious, he knocked out his school maths teacher from the first round of the club’s knock-out championship in the summer.
Mark, who first played golf with a set of plastic clubs as a 12 months old toddler, was one of Thurso Golf Club’s first intake of children through clubgolf. He progressed quickly through the programme and, together with his 10-year-old sister, Lindsay, makes the regular trip to Royal Dornoch for coaching with professional Gary Dingwall.
Lindsay also won the regional final and played in the 2007 Grand Final of the HSBC Wee Wonders at St Andrews
“Mark has set himself the target of getting his handicap into single figures this year,” said Mr Parsonage. “He wants to get into the Nick Faldo Junior Series which means he has to get to eight before June. It’s a tall order but you never know; the lesson he had yesterday at Dornoch put an extra 20 yards onto his game.”
Complementing his practice at the club, and that of another promising youngster, Peter Sangster (aged 13), is the new David Lyall indoor coaching facility, opened last summer after funding from the Highland 2007 Caithness Community Programme, Highland 2007, Awards for All and clubgolf.
“Before we had the range it was impossible to practise in the winter,” said Mr Parsonage. “The new range is fantastic and Mark goes up there three times a week, warming up for between 10 or 20 minutes.”
As one of Thurso Golf Club’s clubgolf Level 1 coaches, Mr Parsonage and the other coaches spend much of his their spare time on Friday evenings at the club, coaching the ever-expanding junior section.
“We have 76 junior members and a good proportion of girls,” he added. “The challenge was always going to be getting more coaches on board and this year we are trying to get more parents involved. We have another two, possibly three, coaches going through the training this year."

GARY PLAYER CONTROVERSY: MANDELA CHILDREN'S
FUND WITHDRAWS INVOLVEMENT IN TOURNAMENT

The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund has withdrawn its involvement in the yearly Nelson Mandela Invitational Golf Tournament.
This follows the controversy surrounding one of the tournament's participants and host, legendary golfer Gary Player, over his business involvement in Myanmar (Burma).
"As a result of our withdrawal the tournament can no longer be called the Nelson Mandela Invitational and should not be marketed as such in any form whatsoever," SAPA news agency quoted the Fund organisers as saying in a statement.
"Of prime concern to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund is the protection of our founder's name, Nelson Mandela, and our associate organizations from the current controversy".
A few weeks ago the 72-year-old Player came under fire from Mandela's fellow South African Nobel peace prize winner Desmond Tutu over his company's construction of a golf club in Myanmar (Burma), with Tutu requesting that organisers withdraw the multiple majors winner from the fund-raising tournament to be held in November in the Western Cape.
"Consequently, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund would regrettably not be able to receive the benefits of the event nor any income derived from the event."
Player had defended himself by saying that his company had built the Pun Hlaing course in 2002 at a time when the military junta in Burma had temporarily released pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.

Nick Faldo presents the Under-21s trophy for the second year in a row to Ben Evans.

BEN EVANS SUCCESFULLY DEFENDS FALDO SERIES 2007

Ben Evans, 20 years old from Staplescross, Sussex, successfully defended the Faldo Junior Series grand final today at the Celtic Manor Resort, finishing with a three-round total of 204, six under par for the tournament.
After two days of impressive golf from a field made up of some of the best young golfing talent from both the European Faldo Series and the Faldo Series Asia, Ben finished with a one under par 69 to win by two strokes.
The winner of the Girls Under 18 category was Emma Goddard, 16, from Liverpool, who won by three strokes.
Ben’s back-to-back wins put him in very good company, as he becomes only the third person in Faldo Series history to successfully defend his title alongside the European Tour’s Oliver Fisher and the winner of last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Nick Dougherty.
Ben commented after his win: “I’m very pleased to be the 2007 Faldo Series champion and to have defended my Faldo Series title. It’s great to be mentioned alongside those players who have achieved the same feat in the past. Nick has been great company this week and it was good to get a chance to put questions to him and Nick Dougherty last night.”
Ben was referring to the Faldo Series 2007 gala dinner on Wednesday night, at which Nick Faldo presented Nick Dougherty with the inaugural Faldo Series Achievement Award.
Faldo commented: “It’s been a great event this year with competitors from Faldo Series tournaments here in the UK, in Europe and also from the Faldo Series Asia, all of whom have produced some fine golf. Ben is a very deserving winner with a big future ahead of him. I also want to thank our special guests, DJ Spoony, Kiran Matharu and Nick Dougherty, who have all kindly given up their time to support the Faldo Series.
"This has been our biggest season to date and I look forward to a new season in which we hope to create even more opportunities for these talented young golfers.”
The leading players from the Faldo Series 2007 will receive an invite from Nick Faldo to the Faldo Series Asia grand final at China’s Mission Hills in December.

FOCUS ON HOW THE SCOTS FARED AT CELTIC MANOR

England-based Stuart Ballingall, the only Scot with a real chance of winning one of age categories on the last day of the Nick Faldo Junior Series Grand Final at Celtic Manor, lost his overnight lead in the Boys Under-17 section and finished third.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL WIN PAUL LAWRIE SCHOOLS
TEAM CHALLENGE TROPHY AT PETERCULTER

Aberdeen Grammar School completed a notable golfing double when they won the Paul Lawrie Schools Team Challenge Scratch Trophy at Peterculter Golf Club today.
In a cold, blustery wind, 17-year-old Mhairi Johnstone and the Macandrew brothers, Donald (17) and Nick (16) won with a very gross team score of 226. Donald had a two-over-par 73 against the CSS of 72, Mhairi a 76 and Nick a 77.
In June, Grammar won the Aberdeen schools championship final at Hazlehead. This was the first time, in the fifth year of the competition, that they had won the Paul Lawrie Team Challenge Scratch Trophy.
They had eight shots to spare at the finish from Westhill Academy’s Matthew Smith (77), Steven Smith (78) and Fraser Clarke (79).
Robert Gordon’s College were third on 237 with a 71 from Jack Scott, an 81 from Ali MacDonald and an 85 from Steven Smith.
Scott’s 71 was the lowest round of the day.
Ellon Academy, who had been bidding to complete a hat-trick, finished on 251.
The A T Personnel Schools Team Challenge Handicap Trophy was won by Bridge of Don Academy’s Luke Sanderson, Murray Kinnaird and Matthew Mitchell. They had a net total of 224 which was not as low as Aberdeen Grammar School’s net total of 214 but the rules of the competition debar a school from figuring in both the scratch and handicap prize lists.
Title-holders Dyce Academy (Cameron Murray, Cameron Smith and Scott Keith) finished second with a net total of 225. Monifieth High (Andrew Cowieson, Michael McNally and Rebecca Wilson) finished third on 226.
