Low scoring over first two rounds at Haggs Castle

WALLACE BOOTH LEADS
AT HALFWAY STAGE OF
CAMERON CORBETT VASE

Tennant Cup winner Wallace Booth again showed his liking for Glasgow golf courses by leading the field at the halfway stage of the Cameron Corbett Vase 72-hole open tournament at Haggs Castle this evening.
Booth, pictured left, who shot a third-round 64 to sweep past overnight leader Craig Watson to win the Tennant Cup when the fourth and last round at Glasgow Killermont was washed out, again showed his capabilities for shooting low scores.
The Comrie man, who recently completed four years on the American college golf circuit as a student at Augusta State University, had rounds of 69 and 66 for a nine-under-par tally of 135 over the par-72 course. The CSS was 71 for the morning round and 72 for the afternoon.
But Booth has not shaken off the star-studded field. On his tail is Scott Henry (Cardross), who was first reserve for the Scotland squad of six for the European team championship at Western Gailes. Former Under-18 ace, Henry had scores of 67 and 69 to start Sunday's last two rounds in second place on 136.
Paul Betty (Hayston) and Robert McKnight (Kilmarnock Barassie) are sharing third place on 137, both with 68 and 69 to their credit.
Defending champion Glenn Campbell from Blairgowrie is joint 10th on 142 after a 72 and 70
Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey), last weekend's winner of the East of Scotland Open at Lundin Links and a leading qualifier for the Open Final Qualifying, went off the boil slightly with scores of 71 and 76 for 147.
Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), last year's West of Scotland Open winner and runner-up to Stewart in the East of Scotland Open, had a better star with 72 and 70 for 142.
Players with totals of 150 and better qualified for the final two rounds.

SOREN HANSEN'S FOUR LATE BIRDIES
GIVE HIM THE LEAD IN THE
EUROPEAN OPEN AT K CLUB

Great Dane Soren Hansen staged a grandstand finish to his third round - four birdies over the last five holes - for a seven-under-par score of 63 and a two-stroke lead on 10-under 200 with one round to go in the Smurfit Kappa European Open at the K Club, Co Kildare, Ireland today.
Hansen, 33, finished second in last weekend's French Open. He has been winless since the Irish Open of 2003.
He leads by two from Englishman Robert Rock who had a 66 for 202.
Hansen was in almost the same position last Saturday evening in the French Open and then made two double bogeys in the opening holes on Sunday.
Australian Peter O'Malley matched Hansen's 63 to be tied for third on 203 with Peter Hanson, Gregory Havret and Niclas Fasth.
Hanson made a hole-in-one on the 173-yard 18th with a 6-iron. That hole is normally a par-5, but was reduced to a par-3 this week because of waterlogging after heavy rain.
Colin Montgomerie, who shot 64 on Friday, bogeyed the last two holes for a 71 and was tied for seventh.
US Open champion Angel Cabrera ran up a quadruple-bogey 8 at the fourth hole after finding water twice. His 74 left him in 65th place among the 68 players in the tournament.

EIGHT YEARS LATER, TIGER EXPECTS A
FAIRER CARNOUSTIE TEST THIS TIME

Tiger Woods expects to see a fairer Carnoustie when he starts his bid for a third successive Open title a week on Thursday.
The world No 1 was seventh the last time the major was held at the Angus links in 1999 - but was 10 over par.
"I think they (the R&A) probably learned a lesson," said Woods.
"It was hard. It was really hard. I've never played a golf course as hard as that was set up - and as unfair as it was set up as well."
He added: "I remember number six, stepping off the fairway nine yards wide in a lay-up area. That's not a real big lay-up area when you have to hit a four iron.
"I think it's a great golf course. I played two Scottish Opens there (1995 and 1996) and I thought it was one of the best golf courses I've ever played.
"Lo and behold, we come back in 1999 and it was not that way any more."
Woods also has concerns the weather may have on his hopes
"The British Open is the only tournament where it's hit or miss on the tee times," he said.
"I mean, you can get the good side or bad side. There's usually a distinct side.
"If you play well, sometimes it may not be good enough because you just may get the wrong side of the draw."

IRELAND WIN EUROPEAN TITLE AS SCOTLAND
FINISH ON A HIGH WITH WIN OVER ENGLAND

Ireland are the new European men's amateur champions. They beat France, conquerors of Scotland in Friday's semi-finals, by 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 in today's final at Western Gailes Golf Club.
Scotland finished on a high by beating old rivals England, the No 1 seeds and defending champions 4-3.
Scotland's "Big Two," Lloyd Saltman and Richie Ramsay, won their singles, confirming the opinion that when they were on song, the Scots were arguably the best team in the championship.
But that's only on paper. Ireland did it where it counted ... on the course ... and to beat a well-prepared French team was a magnficent achievement.
The Irish showed they were no one-man band in managing to win the title despite a defeat in the final's foursomes and again in the singles for their top player, teenager Rory McIlroy who will be playing for GB&I in the Walker Cup.
Saltman has confirmed that this was his last appearance for Scotland. He will turn professional after the Walker Cup match at Royal County Down which comes earlier in September than the men's home internationals.
Richie Ramsay will almost certainly follow suit.
Good luck to them!

KENNY KEEPS COOL TO WIN SCOTTISH
YOUNG PROS TITLE AT WET MUCKHART
Royal Musselburgh assistant Kenny Glen kept his nerve and his overnight lead to win the Clubgolf Scottish young professionals’ championship on another day of rain at Muckhart Golf Club.
There was ample time for Kenny to lose his concentration during a 2hr suspension of play when some of the greens became flooded in mid-afternoon. But when play did restart, Glen just resumed his winning way. He did not hole his last putt until after 9pm which must have made it one of the latest finishing events in Tartan Tour history.
Glen scored 71, 66, 72 and 70 for a five-under-par total of 279. He won by two strokes from first-round leader and playing partner Graeme Lornie (Aspire Golf Centre) who had rounds of 68,71, 71 and 71.

GOLF WRITERS WOULD NOT MIND A BIT IF
TIGER'S CADDIE IS ON THE WAY OUT

He doesn't actually hit, kick or chase a ball of any description but Tiger Woods' caddie, Steve Williams is one of New Zealand's highest-paid sportsmen.
Which makes it all the more hard to believe the rumour mill on the golf circuit that Williams could be stepping down from his highly lucrative post.
Darren Clarke's English caddie, Billy Foster, is the man being tipped to take over the best bagman's job in sport.
Foster apparently impressed Woods when he stepped in to caddy at the 2005 Presidents Cup in Virginia when Williams' fiancee and now wife, Kirsty, was giving birth.
At the time Woods said he liked Foster's personality.
"He's very competitive, very feisty and very similar to Stevie."
Foster, for his part, is playing down all the rumours. He insists that he has not been asked to make the arrangement full time next season.
"A few rumours are flying around, but I've not been approached."
It would be a big surprise if Williams – a caddy since he was 16 – did quit at this stage, having been on the bag for 11 of his boss's 12 majors so far.
In March, on a visit to his native New Zealand, the 43-year-old Williams said that he hoped to keep caddying for Woods until the world No. 1 had reached the major figure of 19 majors –one more than the record held by Jack Nicklaus.
Those who follow Tiger Woods' fortunes for a living - golf writers - would certainly shed no tears if caddie Williams were to disappear from the scene. They dislike Williams for being a very unfriendly, very unhelpful character.

CHRIS DOAK SIX SHOTS OFF THE PACE IN
CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT IN FRANCE

Michael Lorenzo-Vera saw his grip on the A.G.F. Allianz Open des Volcans prised loose by a double bogey 7 after he threatened to take a commanding lead into the third round of the Challenge Tour event at Golf des Volcans, France.
The 22 year old from Biarritz was in cruise control at six under par standing on the tee at the 585 yard 15th, but spilled two strokes to the card and had to settle for a level par 71 and a one shot lead over New Zealand’s Gareth Paddison.
Paddison, 26, from Wellington, was a model of consistency in racking up 16 pars and back to back birdies at the 15th and 16th – the latter hole providing a three shot swing between the two leaders – for a round of 69 and a three under par total of 139.
Lorenzo-Vera, who finished on 138, four under par, and Paddison were the only players to finish another difficult day under par as the cut soared to seven over par 149– the second highest of the season on the Challenge Tour.
After finishing sixth, fourth and second in recent weeks, Lorenzo-Vera is still on course for his first Challenge Tour victory and the winner’s cheque which would move him close to the top of the rankings.
STIFF OPPOSITION
However he faces stiff opposition from Paddison, whose game was in such disarray last November that he rang Madrid-based English coach Jason Floyd to ask for some lessons. The relationship grew and the Kiwi credits his new coach for helping him “turn over a new leaf”.
He said: “I had known Jason, who also coaches the Spaniards, Carl Suneson and Carlos Rodiles, since 2003 and we started working before the Qualifying School at San Roque. The move is really starting to pay dividends. I am swinging much better and my confidence has grown accordingly.
Former Tartan Tour Order of Merit winner Chris Doak is lying handy in joint 11th place on 144 with a pair of 71s. Fellow Scot Edward Thomson just made the cut with nothing to spare with scores of 78 and 71.
Alasdair Hay failed to make it by miles with 79 and 82.
Scott Henderson’s name disappeared off the Challenge Tour’s website scoreboard after the first round. There was no indication that he had retired or withdrawn.

NO FLOWERS OF SCOTLAND, NO ENGLISH
ROSE IN SATURDAY'S EUROPEAN FINAL

Underdogs France and Ireland win semi-finals

There will be no Flowers of Scotland in Saturday's final of the European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes Golf Club.
And the only consolation for the Scots is that the English Rose was also nipped in the bud in the other semi-final.
In fact, the European final will feature the two underdog teams from the semi-finals, France and Ireland. It is France's first appearance in the European final for 40 years.
The second seeded Scots, 2-0 ahead of France after the morning foursomes in the first semi-final, were shocked by their opponents' comeback in the five singles.
France, who have been sending squads of players to tournaments all over Britain and this season to toughen up their players for just such an occasion, reaped the benefits by winning four of the singles and halving the other.
Which meant the end-of-the-day scoreline was Scotland 2 1/2-France 4 1/2.
How are the mighty fallen!
SALTMAN, RAMSAY BEATEN
Lloyd Saltman, top of the European Golf Association rankings, lost by two holes to Romain Bechu. Saltman had been in the driving seat for most of the match but lost three of the last four holes.
Kevin McAlpine, the double Scottish champion who, to be fair, had played out of his skin in the previous days of the championship, went down by 5 and 4 to two-under-par golf from Adrien Bernadet.
Keir McNicoll lost by one hole to Jean Wolff who got up and down from a greenside bunker at the last hole.
Jonathan King salvaged half a point from his tie against Victor Dubuisson.
US amateur champion Richie Ramsay lost by 3 and 2 to Alexandre Kaleka, arguably the best player in the French team and he showed it with a tremendous display of sub-par golf on the outward journey. Kaleka birdied seven of the first nine holes against Richie.
It looked like being a France v England final for a long time. Defending champions England shared the foursomes with Ireland in the second semi-final but the first singles tie to finish went Ireland's way with a 4 and 2 win for Rory McIlroy over Jamie Moul.
England, at one point, were ahead in all the other ties but a dramatic finish saw the Irish level it at 3-3, which meant everything depended on the Richard Kilpatrick v Gary Boyd tie. Boyd was one up after 15 holes but the Irishman managed to square it and Boyd put a ball out of bounds at the last hole for Kilpatrick to finish one up and put Ireland in the final. What a turn-up for the book!
Everyone - except the French and Irish, expected Scotland to play England on Saturday. And so they will, except it will be not for the championship but for third place, a body blow to the hierachy of both national governing bodies.
Suddenly, the odds against Great Britain & Ireland beating the United States in the Walker Cup match at Royal County Down in September have risen steeply. Until this Black Friday set of results, it had been expected that the GB&I team would contain at least two Scots (Saltman & Ramsay) and five or six Englishmen.
Spain whipped Wales 4-1 in the play-offs for places five to eight in the top flight.
Denmark beat Sweden 3-2 and will meet Spain in the play-off to be No 5 in the final rankings.

Anything new in America - golf or not - will find its way across the Atlantic pretty quicky.
Which means we should be interested in an article in today's "Washington Times."
This is what it says:

U S TOURNAMENT SPECTATORS CAN WALK
AROUND WITH POCKET SCOREBOARDS

Tech-savvy golf fans could follow all of the action yesterday at AT&T National without needing to walk all 18 holes of Congressional Country Club.
AT&T lent 500 "Wireless Caddie" devices to spectators, giving them access to an updated leaderboard and play-by-play of their favorite golfers. D.C.-based XM Radio, meanwhile, handed out 1,000 satellite radios to fans for the day, allowing them to follow a live broadcast of the tournament.
For spectators, the handheld devices solved one of the biggest problems of watching a golf tournament in person: Fans can follow only a few players at a time. But the companies also acknowledged they were offering the free devices as a way to lure new customers.
"There's a limit to how much golf you can see at once," said David Butler, a spokesman for XM, which is broadcasting the tournament live on its PGA Tour Network. "It's not like basketball or baseball where all the action is right in front of you. And what we've found is that one of the most effective ways to get new customers is letting them sample the service."
Most of the devices from both companies were grabbed up by spectators before noon yesterday. Reviews of the AT&T Wireless Caddie were generally positive, though some fans complained of its weight — nearly a full pound — and others noted a delay of about 30 seconds to a minute to get the most updated scores.
"There's a bit of a lag, but otherwise it's awesome," Sam Sinha of Silver Spring said as he poked at the device while watching players putt on the 15th green. "It's pretty intuitive. I've been constantly using it."
Fred Waning and Garth and Gary Bogar of Sterling, Va., scrolled through the leader boards on the Wireless Caddies while observing action near the 10th and 18th holes. Earlier, they used the device to determine Adam Scott's drive on 18 went 341 yards.
"It's a bit heavy, but it's useful," Waning said. "You don't have to use the scoreboards."

HISEMAN PARTNER PRESS RELEASE

SEARCH COMPANY TO FIND BEST PEOPLE FOR
JOBS IN GOLF BUSINESSES, DEVELOPMENTS

A new executive search company focusing exclusively on the golf industry has been launched to help golf businesses and course developments identify and appoint the best talent from around the world.
Colt Mackenzie McNair brings more than 20 years’ experience of both the global golf market and the executive resourcing industry to the sport.
The company and its wide network gives Colt Mackenzie McNair a unique ability to identify senior staff that will have the biggest positive impact on a business - wherever they are in the world.
“We are dedicated to improving the quality of executive appointments in golf on a global basis,” said Chief Executive, Stewart McNair, who this week launched the company’s new website www.coltmm.com.
“To deliver individuals to interview for some of the best jobs in golf, it takes a thorough, professional and discreet approach using proven executive search techniques.
“Global golf will need increasing numbers of high calibre people to fulfil its potential over the next ten years and we see our role as helping to identify these people – whether they currently work in golf, or not.
“The golf consumer is far more sophisticated these days in their demands for a better product and higher levels of quality and service. Therefore the golf industry needs to take steps to ensure it identifies and employs the right people to deliver the right products.”
Colt Mackenzie McNair believes it will modernise the way golf businesses recruit their key staff through its creative and highly effective resourcing system – a search and selection process which establishes a client’s exact needs, defines the right type of person required and constructs a dynamic recruitment strategy.
By using an extensive network of professional consultants, in-house researchers and industry specialists - from agronomy to finance, real estate to retail - the company is able to identify the most effective personnel from across the globe.
“Our research tells us that the golf industry does not recruit effectively, perhaps because it gives too much weight to tradition and establishment," said Stewart McNair.
Colt Mackenzie McNair believes the cost of appointing the wrong person to a senior position can be catastrophic for a golf business.
Colt Mackenzie McNair is also launching a bespoke web-driven tool, CMM Selector, giving golf’s exceptional people the opportunity to register their credentials on its website www.coltmm.com. Individuals’ details are then passed on to its consulting team.

CHRIS DOAK LEADS SCOTTISH CHALLENGE WITH
A 72 IN COLD, DAMP AND BLUSTERY FRANCE

From Michael Gibbons,
Challenge Tour Press Officer

Former Northern Open champion Chris Doak overcame the cold, damp, blustery conditions to lead Scotland’s Challenge Tour hopes at the AGF Allianz Open des Volcans – Challenge de France today.
The 2005 Tartan Tour No. 1 from Greenock carded a one-over-par 72 at the Golf des Volcans in Clermont Ferrand to lie five shots behind runaway leader Michael Lorenz-Vera of France, whose 67 gave him three stroke lead.
Doak may have shot over par, but he is well in contention in 13th place with three rounds to go.
Chris had birdies at the second, sixth, 11th and 15th in halves of 38 and 34.
Scott Henderson is in joint 89th position after a 77 which included back-to-back double bogeys - a 7 at the par-5 sixth, and a 6 at the par-4 seventh, in halves of 41 and 36. He did birdie the 16th.
Edward Thomson had a 78 (39-39) and Alasdair Hay a 79 (43-36).
With the projected cut 150 (2 x 75), these three Scots need to pull up their socks in the second round.

K CLUB COURSE SHORTED TO PAR 70 BECAUSE
OF RAIN FOR EUROPEAN OPEN

Radical action was taken before the start of the Smurfit Kappa European Open at the rain-soaked K Club near Dublin - and, like Wimbledon, it was all because of the rain.
The 18th was reduced from a 578yd par-5 to a 162yd par-3. In all seven holes were shortened by a total of 653 yards.
The change on the final hole reduced the overall par from 72 to 70 and officials said that the same decision had already been taken for Friday's second round.
In addition, placing of the ball on the sodden fairways was likely to be in operation for all four rounds of the £2.4million tournament.
Maarten Lafeber from the Netherlands led at the end of the first day with a six-under-par 64.

McNICOLL A HERO FOR SCOTS AS
THEY BEAT SPAIN 4-3 TO EARN LAST
FOUR TIE AGAINST FRANCE

Scotland are through to a semi-final meeting on Friday with France, one of the most improved teams of the season, in the European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes Golf Club, Ayrshire.
But Scotland, the No 2 seeds, were given a bit of a fright by seventh qualifiers Spain before eliminating them 4-3.
France, the No 3 qualifiers, beat Wales 5-2.
Ireland, the No 4 seeds, whipped Sweden 4-1 and will play top seeds England in the second semi-final . England beat Denmark 5 1/2-1 1/2.
Keir McNicoll , pictured right, from Carnoustie was Scotland's hero after the Spaniards had fought back to level the match overall at 3-3 with a shock two-hole defeat for anchor man Richie Ramsay and a reverse for Jonathan King.
Kevin McAlpine, top Scot in the qualifying rounds, had another another great day, winning at the 19th against Pedro Erice. Lloyd Saltman had won the No 12 singles match by 4 and 3 over Ignacio Elvira.
With the match capable of going either way at 3-3, Keir aced the 13th hole on his way to a 19th hole win over Jorge Campillo.
McNicoll is the second Carnoustie player Campillo has faced in recent weeks. It was the Spaniard who defeated Scott Mann 3 and 2 in the second round of the British amateur championship at Royal Lytham. Campillo went on to reach the quarter-finals before losing by one hole to eventual runner-up Tim Stewart, Australia.

GLEN BOUNCES BACK TO LEAD AT MUCKHART
AFTER NEAR-MISS IN OPEN QUALIFYING

Kenny Glen, halfway leader by two strokes in the Clubgolf Scottish young professionals’ golf championship at Muckhart Golf Club, near Dollar, will play two rounds with the rest of the qualifiers on 154 or better tomorrow.
It will be the second time in three days that the Royal Musselburgh assistant has squeezed 36 holes into one day – because he made the trip to Musselburgh for the Open regional qualifying round on Wednesday after he had scored a 71 in the first round at Muckhart.
Glen failed by the narrowest of margins to make it through to the Open Final Qualifying. He was one of a bunch who scored 72 and only Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) got through on the scorecard play-off.
Kenny showed no signs of his exertions today when scoring a five-under-par 66 to take up the running in the £10,000 Scottish young pros’ championship with a five-under-par tally of 137.
Glen’s bogey-free card had a birdies at the first, fourth, fifth, 13th and 18th.
Overnight leader Graeme Lornie (Aspire Golf Centre) dropped down to second place with a par 71 for a three-under-par tally of 139.

NOTTS GOLF CLUB TO STAGE PGA
PLAY-OFFS IN MID-OCTOBER

Notts Golf Club will host this year's PGA Play-Offs in which Britain's best PGA club pros compete for a golden ticket to four of Europe's biggest tournaments. The acclaimed East Midlands course, an established Open regional qualifier venue, will stage the £15,000 event on October 16 and 17 with the leading finisher gaining entry into the BMW PGA Championship, Celtic Manor Wales Open, Smurfit Kappa European Open and Barclays Scottish Open.
The field will comprise the leading three players from each of the seven PGA regions with spots also available in four Challenge Tour events - the Ryder Cup Wales Challenge, Ireland Ryder Cup Challenge, Scottish Challenge and Morson International Pro-Am.
Gary Marks from Surrey's World of Golf won the inaugural event at Woodhall Spa to be crowned No 1 PGA pro last year and this week is reaping the rewards as he lines up alongside US Open champion Angel Cabrera and Co at the European Open at The K Club.
Notts, better known as Hollinwell, was designed by the legendary Willie Park Junior and current head pro Michael Bradley, just the seventh pro in the club's 120 year history, is predicting a tough test for his peers.
"We've got seven or eight new bunkers so it's going to make it even tougher off the tee, bringing them more into the fairway and making you think about the drive more," he said.
"At that time of the year the holes will play long - off the blue tees the course is 7213 yards so there isn't any hole where you can't afford to be accurate off the tee. If you drive it well you have got a good chance of scoring well," he added.
"There are not many short par fours, only two under 400 yards. Its strength is in its length."
The Notts club enjoys a great history with its first professional the amazing Tom Williamson who was pro from 1896 to his death in 1950. Along the way he played in every Open from 1897 to 1947, a world record.

THERE'S THE RICH, THEN THERE'S
TIGER WOODS, THE WORLD'S
HIGHEST-PAID ATHLETE

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN THE WASHINGTON TIMES

By Tim Lemke
When Tiger Woods won the Las Vegas Invitational in 1996 to record his first US PGA Tour victory, he went home with $297,000.
Multiply that by about 400, and you'll have the amount Woods will earn from golf and endorsements in 2007.
Woods has become the world's highest-paid athlete.
Tiger is earning more than twice as much money than any other sports star on the planet. By the time new daughter Sam Alexis reaches pre-school, he will have a net worth approaching $1 billion, placing him in company normally reserved for egghead software executives and real estate tycoons.
If Woods, 31, wins his own tournament this weekend, he will have topped $6 million in winnings this year and well over $70 million for his career. But those totals comprise a mere fraction of Woods' total earnings; he is likely to earn more than $100 million from endorsements by the end of the year.
Sports Illustrated recently estimated that Woods will earn $111,941,827 in 2007, with a little less than $12 million of that coming from golf winnings and appearance fees. His earnings are expected to be more than double that of boxer Oscar De La Hoya, who is ranked second on the list with earnings of about $55 million.
Woods' endorsement income is especially remarkable when you consider that he does fewer endorsement deals than many top athletes. But his endorsements are incredibly lucrative.
His high-profile deal with Nike is expected to earn him more than $100 million, and he gets a cut of the sales of Nike Golf merchandise.
He also has a deal with General Motors and Buick worth about $40 million. Other endorsement deals involve American Express, Tag Heuer watches, EA Sports and Asahi coffee.
"There's no question that with some of the sponsors he has, it's the pick of the litter,' said Grant Carter, a banker with the sports professionals group RBC Investments, who has advised several top athletes on their finances.
"There isn't a brand that wouldn't want to be attached to him, and he could probably name his price for any of them."

SCOTS IN TOP BRACKET OF MCGREGOR TROPHY FIRST-ROUND SCORES

Three Scots are in the top 15 at the end of the first round against the best Under-16 boy golfers in England and farther afield in the English junior championship for the McGregor Trophy at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, Lancashire.
James Foster (Waterlooville) and Spain’s Hugo Menendez are the pacemakers on two-under-par 70, four shots under the CSS.
Wet and windy weather at Southport & Ainsdale made it difficult for the 135 competitors. But it didn’t prevent Foster and Menendez from shooting two-under-par 70 to share the lead. They were the only players to beat par in conditions that were tough to handle and even if the pair did get the better of the weather late in the day, their returns were nothing short of superb. They are two strokes ahead of Max Smith from Newbury Racecourse who showed he is a true thoroughbred by returned a fine 72.
Foster, 15, the Hampshire junior champion and junior champion at his club, Waterlooville, had an eagle and four birdies in his 70. What made it even more creditable was that he was two over par after three holes. “It was very windy and we had a lot of rain during the round but you just had to keep going,” he said. “They are not my favourite conditions but you just have to grin and bear it. However, the greens were superb and the course is quality.”
Menendez, a 16 year old under 16 cap from Gijon, had five birdies in his 70 crafted in totally un-Spanish weather. “It was not easy,” he said. “I missed the cut last year so this is better.”
Christopher Robb from Inchmarlo, Banchory and David Law, from Hazlehead, the Aberdeen municipal course, were both on the 74 mark, one ahead of Andrew McLachlan from Eastwood.
McLachlan, picture above by courtesy of TOM WARD, had the potentially unsettling experience of hitting a pigeon in flight with his first shot of the day at the par-3 opening hole.
It was thought at first that the bird had been killed but it had "only" been stunned. After being revived by some spectators, it was last seen flying off in the direction of Royal Birkdale.
Paul McPhee (King James VI) holed a putt on the last green to break 80 with a 79.
Tom Blennerhassett (Dalmhoy) and Daniel Young from the Craigie Hill club, Perth both had 81s. Matthew Reid (Downfield) and Aberdonian William Russell, the 15-year-old MEN’S champion of The Duke’s club at St Andrews both scored 83, one ahead of Colin Baird (Bothwell Castle).
Ian Redford (King James VI) had an 85 and Jack Scott of Deeside an 86.

US OPEN WINNER CABRERA IS NAMED EURO
TOUR PLAYER OF MONTH

Angel Cabrera has been named as the European Tour Golfer of the month for June following his victory at Oakmont Country Club, where he became the first Argentine winner of the US Open championship.
Cabrera shot a final round of 69, one of only two rounds under par on the final day, for a five over par total of 285, one better than Tiger Woods and another former winner, Jim Furyk.
His victory was only the second Major success for an Argentine golfer, following Roberto de Vicenzo’s Open championship triumph at Royal Liverpool in 1967.
“I am very happy with all this recognition which gives me strength to keep playing at the highest level,” said Cabrera. “This win was very important, especially as it had been 40 years since another Argentine won a Major so hopefully my US Open win will be a big boost for golf in Argentina.
“The Golfer of the Month award is very important to me. The European Tour is my home. I have been here since 1996 and feel very comfortable here.”

OPEN REGIONAL QUALIFYING

NEIL MURRAY AND THAT MAN DUNCAN
STEWART AGAIN RELEGATE CALLUM
MACAULAY TO THIRD AT MUSSELBURGH

Scottishgolfview.com's roving reporter HUGH HUNTER was at Musselburgh Golf Club today for the Scottish venue on today's wide-ranging programme of 18-hole regional qualifying competitions for the Open championship.

Hugh saw Callum Macaulay bounce back very well indeed from having to settle for second place behind Duncan Stewart in the weekend East of Scotland Open at Lundin Links.
Macaulay posted an early score of four-under-par 67 which stayed unchallenged at the top of the scoreboard for many hours before, late in the day, he was relegated to an honourable third in the huge field of professionals and amateurs.

Neil Murray (Cruden Bay), pictured above, and that man Duncan Stewart again both shot five-under-par 66s.

Callum birdied the second and fourth and reached the turn in two-under-par 34.
His only slip for a bogey came at the short 11th where he was bunkered.
Macaulay responded in the style of a very good player by holing birdie putts of six and 12 feet at the 13th and 14th. The Tulliallan member capped his rough with a birdie 4 at the long last, which he reduced to a drive, two-iron, a pitch and an eight-foot putt.
In the end the leading 20 players, their scores spanning 66 to 72, qualified for the 36-hole Final Qualifying. Former British boys champion Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) was the only player who returned a 72 to make. He came through a card countback against eight other players on the one-over-par mark.

CELTIC TOUR PRESS RELEASE

QUALITY FIELD FOR CARMARTHERNSHIRE OPEN

A high quality field including European Tour, Asian Tour, Challenge Tour and EuroPro Tour players heads for the Carmarthenshire Open at Garnant next week.
The event – the latest on the Dragon Tour, Wales’ first pro golf tour - marks the first professional event to be held at Garnant Park.
The Tour, now rebranded as the Celtic Pro Tour, rolls into Garnant Park next Tuesday and Wednesday, July 10 and 11.
Stuart Manley (ISM/Mountain Ash), who won the last event of the 2006 season at Machynys, and was runner up in the first event of this season at Pyle and Kenfig, has entered the event at the local authority run course.
He is in good form and is fresh from pocketing 14,300 euros as runner up in last weekend’s Challenge Tour event, the Estoril Challenge de Portugal, following a four-round total of 9 under par.
That event immediately followed another solid performance by Manley at the Open de Saint Omer in France, a European Tour event, in which he made the cut and finished in 38th position, collecting another 3,100 euros in the process.
Asian Tour professional Craig Smith (St Mellons) is also in the field at Garnant - back in the UK after spending the first part of this year travelling throughout the sub-continent while competing in 11 events, so far returning him $40,092.
Currently lying in 57th place in the Asian Tour Order of Merit, Smith’s best result to date has been eighth in the Singapore Masters in March.
Making his season’s debut on the Celtic Pro Tour is Adam Constable, who has already successfully defended his Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship title at Aberdovey Golf Club in April. Europro Tour professional Matthew Dearden (www.vale-hotel.com) is also in the field.
These golfers will face stiff opposition from last season’s Dragon Tour Order of Merit winner, Alex Smith (Pyle & Kenfig), who is fresh from three top 10 finishes on the EuroPro Tour and a Celtic Pro Tour win at Gower in June, and fellow EuroPro Tour golfer and former Welsh and Portuguese Amateur Champion, David Price (Aber Wrought Iron / www.vale-hotel.com).
Last week’s winner at Machynys, Matthew Griffiths (Whitchurch), current Order of Merit leader, Tom Davies (Machynys Peninsula) and consistent Alun Evans (Newport Links) will all have a big say in the tournament.
Carmarthenshire County Council Executive Board Member for Leisure Services Clive Scourfield said: “It’s brilliant to see Garnant winning the recognition it deserves. I am confident this will be the first of many big occasions for the parkland course.”
The Carmarthenshire County Course is managed by Kerry Jones who said he was thrilled that Garnant was going to be on the schedule of the developmental professional tour. He said: “We have made quite a name for ourselves and have been recognised in the golfing world for the high standards of course preparation and a true test for golf professionals.”
Tour Director Rhydian Thomas said: “We welcome spectators free of charge at our events , so anyone wanting to come along and watch quality professional golf on their doorstep, they will be made most welcome.”
The Tour, which also encompasses visits to Ireland and Scotland, for four events under the new brand, the Celtic Pro Tour, has 11 events in Wales from June to October.
Entries are still being taken for the event and professional golfers or scratch handicap amateurs wishing to enter the Carmarthenshire Open are asked to contact Rhydian Thomas on 07861 686568 or register and pay online at the website at www.celticpro.com by 5pm on Sunday, July 8.
Professional entry is £99, plus £50 for non members. Amateur golfers with a scratch handicap or better can also enter at a cost of £55, and don’t need to pay membership. Prize money at the event will be:
Winner £1,000
Runner Up £500
3rd £250
4th £150
5th £100
A voucher will be available to the leading amateur.

ENGLISH GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE

ENGLAND SENDING TOP BOY PROSPECTS
TO EUROPEAN YOUNG MASTERS

Two of the England's brightest prospects, Eddie Pepperell (Drayton Park) and Oscar Sharpe (Minchinhampton), will represent England in the European Young Masters tournament at Golf de Bondues in France from July 26 to 28.
Both are members of the English Golf Union’s training squads, Pepperell of the under 18s while Sharpe is included in the under 16s, and both will be heading for France after representing England in the European boys' team championships in Denmark next week.
Pepperell, 16, from BB&O, won the English Under 14 title in 2005 and was runner-up to Sharpe in last year’s English Under-16 championship. He represented England at under-16 level before making his debut at boys level in last year’s boys home internationals. He played in South Africa earlier this year before losing a playoff for the Hampshire Hog, finishing tied fourth in the McEvoy Trophy.
Sharpe, who won't be 15 until September, is one of the youngest players ever to represent England at boys' level, having made his debut for the under-16 team in last year’s match with Spain at Heswell. The Gloucestershire lad had a triumphant 2006, winning the under 14, 15 and 16 national titles as well as the Douglas Johns Trophy and the North of England boys' championship. He also won the Gloucestershire under 15, 16 and 18 titles. The Millfield Schoolboy has enjoyed top-10 finishes in the Selborne and Hampshire Salvers and the McEvoy Trophy this year before winning the Ashton Vase at Long Ashton recently.
The European Young Masters includes a girls' competition - ELGA is sending Alex Peters from Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire’s Helen Searle - with a Nations Cup covering both, three of the four cards each day to count.
+++There has been no indication from the Scottish Golf Union or the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association about whether or not they are sending players to the European Young Masters.

NOT A BAD DAY FOR SCOTLAND AS KEVIN
McALPINE LEADS WAY INTO THIRD PLACE

Scotland are lying in third place on 357 behind France (353) and England (355) as they go into Wednesday's second and final qualifying round for the match-play stages of the European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes, Ayrshire.
The main objective is to be among the top eight teams after the second round because only they go forward to the championship flight match-play. You cannot win the European title if you finish ninth in the qualifying. It is as simple as that.
Double Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) was the Scotland hero with a team-leading, three-under-par 68. Only five of the six scores count daily for each team in the qualifying rounds.
Scotland's other counters were Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen) and Jonathan King (Glasgow), both with rock-solid 70s. Then there was a gap in the standard of performance to the next counting score of three-over-par 74 by Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw). James Byrne (Banchory), making his debut at men's international level, had his four-over 75 also counting. The non-counter was Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) with a 77.

KEVIN McALPINE LEADS THE WAY FOR SCOTLAND
WITH A 68 BUT LLOYD SALTMAN HAS A 74

Double Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine (Alyth) has given Scotland a boost in the first of the two stroke-play qualifying rounds of the European men's amateur team championship at Western Gailes Golf Club, Ayrshire.
Kevin has shot a three-under-par 68 (34-34), which helps to counter-balance a disappointing 74 from Lloyd Saltman (39-35).
Jonathan King (Glasgow) has weighed in with a 70 (36-34) but Keir McNicoll (Carnoustie) could do no better than a 77 (38-39).
Still out on the course with the time coming up to 5pm were James Byrne (Banchory) and Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen).
Each team drops its worst score on the day to gave a first-round team total. At the end of 36 holes (second round on Wednesday), the eight teams with the lowest aggregates make up the championship flight for match-play.

EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN WINNER
DUNCAN HEADING FOR USA – BUT
HE WOULD COME HOME FOR A CAP

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

If the Scottish Golf Union selectors have Duncan Stewart on their short leet for the men’s home internationals in September, they had better not waste much time in getting in touch with the 23-year-old from Grantown on Spey.
Winner of the East of Scotland Open amateur championship at Lundin last weekend, Stewart will be packing his suitcases very shortly for a return to the States where he spent the last four years as a very successful member of the golf team at Jacksonville University, Florida.
“My girlfriend lives in America and my future lies over there. I am going back to play in two tournaments, maybe three, if I qualify for the US amateur championship,” said Duncan.
“The first is the Scratch Players Championship at the Del Rio Country Club in California. Rhys Davies beat Oliver Fisher in a play-off for that title last year.
It’s considered one of the big ones on the American amateur golf calendar. Immediately after that I’m going to try to qualify for next month’s US amateur championship at the Olympic Club, San Francisco.
Then, I think I will turn professional in the States and play on one of the good satellite tours they have over there. I would hope to go to the US Tour School later in the year.”
There is only one thing that will change Duncan Stewart’s plans – and that’s where the SGU selectors come in.
“I would delay turning pro and definitely come back to this country if I was selected to play for Scotland in the home internationals (September 19 to 21 at Co Louth, Ireland). It would mean a lot to me to finish my amateur career playing for Scotland in the men’s home internationals,” said Duncan, who was capped for Scotland in the boys’ home internationals at Blairgowrie in 2002.
“I have to be honest. I don’t think I will be selected on the basis of winning the East of Scotland Open. But I can always hope.”
Stewart is being somewhat self-deprecative. Last summer, the SGU thought Duncan was a good enough player to represent Scotland in the Chiberta Grand Prix, a prestigious 72-hole event in south-west France. And Duncan responded by beating an international field.
Being a winner must surely count for something with the SGU selectors. Stewart won four or five 54-hole tournaments on the US college circuit over the past four years and helped Jacksonville University win several conference team championships.

ROCCA SET FOR PGA SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP
DEBUT AT STOKE BY NAYLAND, ESSEX

Popular Italian Constantino Rocca will add a Latin touch to this year's PGA Seniors Championship after confirming his attendance at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club.
The 50-year-old Ryder Cup star from Italy will be among the field challenging defending champion Sam Torrance at the Essex club from September 6-9.
The five time European Tour winner played in three consecutive Ryder Cups (1993-95-97) and famously won a crucial singles, by 4 and 2, over Tiger Woods at Valderrama to help Europe to victory in 1997.
Rocca's biggest win came a year earlier when he won the PGA Championship at Wentworth, helping to erase some of the disappointment felt at losing a play-off to John Daly in the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews.
"I will be trying as hard as I ever did on The European Tour. When you get on a golf course with the idea of winning, nothing changes in your mind," he said.
Rocca celebrated his first senior tournament win in only his third appearance on the over-50s Tour when he captured the AIB Irish Seniors Open at the PGA National Ireland at Palmerstown House.
Steve Cox, PGA Director of Golf and Tournament Director for the PGA Seniors Championship, said: "This is fantastic news for the Championship as Constantino is not only still a great player, but he is also such gentleman with bags of charisma."We are expecting some big crowds during the tournament and I'm in no doubt that he'll prove to be an instant hit with the spectators."ends

PADRAIG HARRINGTON BIDS
FOR A HAT-TRICK IN ALFRED
DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP ·
Defending champion Padraig Harrington is to return to St Andrews in October with the goal of winning an unprecedented third Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Harrington delighted the Old Course galleries last year when he won his second Dunhill title on the way to his first European Order of Merit crown. Scottish golf fans had turned up in their thousands to watch what was expected to be a final day shoot-out over the Old Course between Harrington and Bradley Dredge for one of the most prestigious titles in golf.
Harrington had started the round one shot behind the Welshman, but the championship was effectively decided by the events at the 174yd 11th hole. Dredge hit his shot into a deep bunker, eventually finishing with a double bogey 5, while Harrington sank a 20ft putt for a birdie 2.
The three-shot swing gave Harrington a lead he never lost.
It has already been an emotional 2007 for World No 11 Harrington as he became the first Irishman in 25 years to win the Irish Open, when he beat Bradley Dredge, again, in a dramatic play-off at Adare Manor in May. Harrington will face a formidable field at St Andrews including another former winner, Colin Montgomerie, and Paul Casey and Nick Dougherty, who were involved in the dramatic finale of the US Open last month at Oakmont.
Dougherty led after the first round, ultimately finishing seventh, while Casey shot an unforgettable 66, the best round of the championship, to finish 10th.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship traditionally boasts one of the most international fields on the European Tour and South Africa’s popular World No 5 Ernie Els will return again. Another early entrant is Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo.
The championship, which takes place from October 4-7, was conceived as a celebration of links golf and will be played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses – the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Carnoustie will be fresh from hosting the 2007 Open Championship later this month. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has a unique format. With a prize fund of US$5 million, it incorporates two separate competitions - an individual professional tournament for the world's leading golfers and a team event in which they are paired with some of the most celebrated amateur golfers.
Among the amateurs who played last year were Marcus Allen, Ian Botham, Zinzan Brooke, Sir Bobby Charlton, Johan Cruyff, Kenny Dalglish, Michael Douglas, Morné du Plessis, Jonathan Edwards, Hugh Grant, Ruud Gullit, Dennis Hopper, Ronan Keating, Kyle MacLachlan, Bill Murray, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Richard Ramsay, Sir Steve Redgrave, Tico Torres and Michael Vaughan.
Entrance to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be FREE at all three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
A ticket price of £15 (concessionary £10) will be charged for the final day’s play over the Old Course on Sunday, October 7.
Entry for under 16s and students is free.
Tickets are available through the ticket hotline on 0870 010 9021 or at the entrance gates. There is free parking for spectators and a free shuttle bus service will be in operation between the courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

EUROPEAN TOUR PRESS RELEASE

BALLANTINE’S SPONSOR FIRST EUROPEAN
TOUR EVENT IN SOUTH KOREA NEXT YEAR

The European Tour and the Korea PGA are delighted to announce that Ballantine’s, the world’s number three Scotch whisky, will title sponsor The Ballantine’s Championship at the Pinx Golf Club on the picturesque island of Jeju, South Korea, from March 13-16, 2008, with a prize fund of €2,000,000.
This is the first European Tour event to be held in Korea. In this historic move, Ballantine’s has agreed an initial three year arrangement for the Championship which will be promoted by the Parallel Media Group.
Christian Porta, Chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers, which owns Ballantine’s, said: “The European Tour brings a global stage for this tournament, for Ballantine’s and for Korean golf. It is our privilege to help bring for the first time such a prestigious event to Korea which is already world famous for its golfers and its love of golf. We hope all will recognise our desire to help further increase the sport’s popularity in Korea.”
George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: “We are delighted to welcome Ballantine’s into our family of global sponsors and congratulate them in addition to the Korea PGA and the Parallel Media Group for their foresight, support and vision. This is an exciting new territory for The European Tour which meets with our policy to grow the game worldwide and Pinx Golf Club will provide a spectacular venue for the players and fans alike.”
The Ballantine’s Championship marks the first time that The European Tour International Schedule has visited Korea and brings to 38 the number of destinations to have hosted Tour competition.
Korea’s influence on The European Tour is already well established with KJ Choi becoming the first Korean to win on The European Tour International Schedule when he captured the 2003 German Masters while compatriot YE Yang held off a world class field including World Number One Tiger Woods to capture the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai last November.
Seoung Ghee Wook, the Korea PGA Vice-Chairman, said: “I am very pleased that this official European Tour event, the Ballantine’s Championship, is being held for the first time in Korea. The Ballantine’s Championship will make a huge contribution to the continuing development of Korean professional golf and will help build a close relationship between Korea and The European Tour.
"The Korea PGA is looking forward to working with The European Tour and Ballantine’s to ensure that the tournament is an outstanding success.”
Pinx Golf Club, located on Jeju Island, just south of the Korean mainland, is a state-of-the-art resort with a stunning Scottish Moorland-style course set amongst spectacular lava outcrops with views of Halla Mountain and the Yellow Sea.
Jeju Island, also known as ‘Island of the Gods’ is a popular vacation destination for Koreans, dominated by Halla-san, South Korea’s highest peak.
The facility, which has 27 holes – all providing views of the Halla Mountains and the sea – was designed by the renowned US golf course designer, Theodore G Robinson, and entered the US Golf Digest 100 best courses list at number 72 in 2005-2006.
Ballantine’s Scotch whisky enjoys an iconic status across Asia and is Korea’s favourite super-premium imported Scotch.

ASIAN TOUR PRESS RELEASE

STATEMENT ON THE EUROPEAN TOUR’S
ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW EVENT IN KOREA

The European Tour continues to proceed on its expansion programme to colonise Asia with the announcement of a Korean event today without the official involvement of the Asian Tour.

This represents the European Tour’s blatant disregard towards the Asian Tour, which is the official regional sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia.

This invasive action clearly goes against the principles of the International Federation of PGA Tours which main goals are to promote cooperation between Tours through the joint-sanctioning of significant competitions.

The Asian Tour will table a motion at the next meeting of the International Federation of PGA Tours which takes place during the Open Championship in Scotland later this month, This will reflect our serious concerns as we feel that the European Tour has stepped out of its boundary.

While we fully welcome the creation of new tournaments in Asia, the Asian Tour is totally aghast at the European Tour’s actions in not following protocol and respecting our position as the governing body for professional golf in Asia.

Last month, the European Tour announced a new Indian event to take place in New Delhi in 2008 without the involvement of the Asian Tour and subsequently, the Asian Tour engaged the European Tour in discussions to seek an acceptable solution to this Indian tournament as well as the Korean event.

However, these discussions proved futile as the European Tour are clearly dictating terms without giving consideration towards the Asian Tour’s efforts to promote golf in the Asian region.

SCOTTISH GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE

EUROPEAN STARS LINE UP FOR TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP AT WESTERN GAILES

Euro stars are set to shine this week on the stunning links golf course at Western Gailes Golf Club, proud hosts of the 25th European men's amateur team championship.
With 20 teams from across the Continent set to embark on their Euro campaign, which gets underway today, action looks set to be hot on the picturesque Ayrshire course, even if the temperatures don’t match the sizzling form.
Scotland boasts a strong line-up with US amateur champion Richie Ramsay and Irish open amateur stroke-play champion Lloyd Saltman heading the team. Saltman and Glasgow's Jonathan King competed in the last European team championship when it was hosted at Hillside Golf Club, Lancashire in 2005.
Bancory boy wonder James Byrne offers fresh young talent in the mix, and with proven winners Kevin McAlpine and Keir McNicoll completing the six-strong squad, the Scots will start among the favourites.
With leading golfing nations providing a strong overseas challenge, teams will have to ensure their game is on par to progress from the two stroke play qualifying rounds to a much sought after place in the upper flight of the match-play stages. The climax to the tournament is the final on Saturday.
Commenting on the tournament, SGU CEO Hamish Grey said: “The European amateur team championship always provides a very strong field with some of the world’s best amateur golfers keen to demonstrate their prowess. Looking at the calibre of previous competitors in this event from Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal to Sergio Garcia gives you some indication of what a great tournament this will be.
“This is one of the biggest events we have staged and with many Walker Cup squad members including former world No 1 Jamie Moul and Norway’s star Marius Thorpe – winner of the silver medal at The Open last year. This is a great opportunity to watch the future stars of European golf.”
The SGU have commended the work of the Westerg Gailes Golf Club greenkeepers keeping the course in excellent condition for the week ahead.
Scottishgolfview.com will be giving regular updates from Western Gailes but for live scoring, log on to the dedicated website:

KEVIN McALPINE LOOKING TO THE FUTURE ... and if his Dad is anything to
go by, Scottish golf is in safe hands

Kevin McAlpine is the son of one of Scotland's most famous goalkeepers – but the 23-year-old has shown that he also has a safe pair of hands in gathering an impressive array of golfing trophies. The Alyth member scaled new heights last season when he captured the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship at Nairn and, this year, he completed an impressive double by adding the Bidwells Scottish open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal Dornoch.
Just for good measure, Kevin, pictured above, is also the holder of the North of Scotland Open stroke-play championship for the David Blair Trophy.
So it's little wonder that the young McAlpine - Dad Hamish is a Dundee United legend and a pretty good golfer himself - is already planning to turn golf from a serious hobby into a full-time career. And he's looking forward to getting his first taste of life as a European Tour player when he lines up in the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond from July 12-15. But there are a few boxes to be ticked before he turns professional. He is playing for Scotland in this week's European team hampionships at Western Gailes - and then he hopes to reach the pinnacle of the amateur game by playing for Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup at Royal County Down in early September.
"Winning the Scottish amateur (match-play) championship at Nairn last year was a huge confidence boost," said McAlpine, who returned last year from four years at Colorado State University.
"I started this season reasonably well at the Champion of Champions and the Craigmillar Park Open before winning the Scottish Strokeplay, which was another big boost.
"The Walker Cup side is chosen after the Scottish amateur (at Prestwick at the end of this month) and it would be great to be included. But, whatever happens, I'll definitely be going to Tour School at the end of the season.
"Loch Lomond is going to be huge. It will be the first time that I've played alongside the professionals and I'm going to try and enjoy it and really take all I can from the experience." While the majority of top-class amateurs are full-time golfers, Alyth Golf Club member McAlpine manages to mix his high standard of golf with his job as a kitchen designer with JTC Joinery and Timber Operations.
"When I came back from the States last May I wanted a job so I could have a solid income," he explained.
"I get Lottery Funding, which is very good, but I do like to be independent.
"I'm in a good position because the company is great and allows me as much time off as I need. But I do look forward to being able to play golf full time and see how far I can go."
Not surprisingly, McAlpine also toyed with the idea of becoming a footballer. As a teenager, he was a handy midfielder.
"Up until I was about 17, I played both football and golf quite seriously," he said. "But then I had to choose one, and it was golf."
So far, it seems to have been a wise decision.

ALASTAIR FORSYTH ONE OF
16 SUNNINGDALE QUALIFIERS
FOR CARNOUSTIE OPEN

Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell led 16 qualifiers, including Scot Alastair Forsyth, pictured right, into the Open championship starting field after winning the International Final Qualifying event at Sunningdale Golf Club today.
The 36-hole qualifier, played over Sunningdale’s Old and New Courses, saw 120 players do battle for 16 available places at Carnoustie on July 19.
At the end of a day blighted by bad weather and uncomfortable conditions, McDowell compiled rounds of 67-64 for a nine-under-par 131 total, two strokes clear of England’s Nick Dougherty, Sweden’s Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jiménez of Spain, who shared second place on 133.
"I thought we got very lucky with the weather," said McDowell. "We had only two heavy downpours this afternoon, one when we were standing on the 18th tee. But it's amazing how difficult the golf course does play when there is rain.
"The fairways are saturated. The golf course is right on the edge of being saturated anyway. But the way they presented it today was pretty amazing considering how much rain there has been. It was in immensely good shape.
"Last year I holed about a 30-footer on the last green to get into the play-off. Nice to do it with a bit more style this year.
"Carnoustie is a course I do enjoy. I have played there a lot. I certainly did not want to be sitting at home while The Open is going on.
"I think I have the right mind set for these qualifiers. Some of the guys go out and try to play very aggressively. I play very conservatively. Try and take my birdie chances when I get them. You obviously need a lot of mental stamina to get through these 36-holers. I feel like I'm in the top 25 per cent in mental stamina. Got to hang in there all day, try and keep the mistakes off the card."
One of the most unusual aspects of Monday’s International Final Qualifying event was the lack of a sudden-death play-off.
It has become almost a tradition that the Sunningdale qualifier ends with a few players going head to head in a sudden-death shoot-out for that last remaining spot, but that was not to be as exactly 16 players finished on four under par 136 or better.
Seven of the 16 qualifiers made it through on the limit mark of 136, namely Fredrik Andersson-Hed, Peter Baker, Mattias Eliasson, Mark Foster, David Frost, Jose-Filipe Lima and Francesco Molinari
Ross Fisher will make his first appearance in a Major Championship thanks to his brilliant second round 64 that allowed him to finish in fifth place on six under par 134, while completing the 16 qualifiers were Benn Barham, Gregory Bourdy, Alistair Forsyth (65-70) and Oliver Wilson, all on 135.
Steven O'Hara was one Scot denied the chance by being unable to catch a flight to London because of the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport.
Among others who failed to make it through were last year's Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam.

Open championship international qualifying at Sunningdale

FOUR PUTTS FROM TWO FEET ... THEN PIN
POSITION IS MOVED BY R&A OFFICIAL

Play was suspended amid farcical scenes at the Open championship qualifying event at Sunningdale today to allow tournament officials to alter the pin location on the fourth hole.
R&A Championship committee chairman Martin Kippax made the decision after eight players had finished the hole, asking that they all replay it and disregard their original score. He was prompted by increasing frustration from the players, typified by Australian Brett Rumford, who four-putted after hitting his tee shot to within two feet of the hole. Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez also fell foul of the pin placement, five-putting.
"I chose the pin positions because of the weather we've had and the forecast we had for today," said Kippax. "The chance of thunderstorms meant that I chose a place where we would hopefully be able to continue play. I was then made aware by a referee on the course that we had a potential problem. I went out and saw that it was in an unplayable position."
Not all of the eight players were happy with Kippax's decision to replay the hole however. Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed was furious after his initial par 3 was replaced by a double-bogey 5 at the second attempt, taking his four-under-par 66 up to a 68.
"I think the European Tour should do the pins," he said. "Every time I've played in an event run by the R&A (Royal and Ancient Club) there have been one or two that were barely playable."
A field of 120 are competing on the old course at Sunningdale for 16 places in the Open at Carnoustie.

RAMSAY AND SALTMAN TO PLAY IN EUROPEAN
CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT AT CARDRONA

Richie Ramsay and Lloyd Saltman, two of Scotland’s highest profile amateur players, will join many of Europe’s finest up-and-coming professional talents at the Scottish Challenge presented by Bank of Scotland Corporate.
The appearance of Ramsay and Saltman in the €200,000 event, the third richest tournament on the 2007 Challenge Tour Schedule, to be played at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf and Country Club, near Peebles from August 9-12, will be a huge boost to the Scottish Challenge presented by Bank of Scotland Corporate.
Ramsay finished fourth in the Scottish Challenge at Murcar Links last summer before becoming the first Scot to win the US amateur championship since 1898.
Saltman, who won the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at the 2005 Open championship at St Andrews by finishing 15th, has made an unbelievable start to his 2007 season in the amateur ranks, winning four 72-hole titles, including the Lytham Trophy.
Both players featured in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team in 2005, and are part of the 20-man squad for this year’s edition of amateur golf’s Ryder Cup.

ENGLAND NAME THREE FOR CHIBERTA GRAND PRIX
(which Duncan Stewart won last year)

Miles Mackman, winner of last month’s Lagonda Trophy, plus Gareth Evans and Luke Goddard will represent the English Golf Union in the annual Chiberta Grand Prix in Biarritz, France, from July 12 to 15.
Mackman, 21 from the Broome Manor club in Wiltshire, won the Lagonda at Gog Magog, Cambridge, by two shots with a 13 under par 267.
Evans, 27, from the Northcliffe club in Bradford, followed up his Yorkshire championship success by winning the English county champions' tournament at Woodhall Spa last August.
Goddard, 19, from the Hendon club in Middlesex, is also a member of the England under 21 squad. Last year he won several titles including the McEvoy Trophy, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, the South East Junior Championship and represented England in the European Boys Team Championships and the Boys Home Internationals. He also represented GB&I against the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
Duncan Stewart from Grantown on Spey - weekend winner of the East of Scotland Open at Lundin links, won the Chiberta Grand Prix last year.
There is no indication from the Scottish Golf Union that it is sending any player or players to the prestigious tournament this year. But team announcements from the SGU tend to be on the day of the tournament concerned so there is still time yet.

CHRIS GAITTENS JOINS SELECT BAND WHO
HAVE WON BOTH NORTH BOYS'
MAJOR TOURNAMENTS IN SAME YEAR

By ROBIN WILSON

The only scratch rated golfer in Sunday's field at Strathpeffer Spa, Chris Gaittens (picture right, by Robin Wilson) from Fortrose and Rosemarkie, joined a celebrity list of only four other junior golfers who have captured the Spence and Bain Trophies in the same year when he won the Bain Trophy in the Royal Bank of Scotland North District boys' championship.
At Garmouth and Kingston at the end of April, teenager Gaittens (17) became the holder of the Spence Trophy from the North of Scotland Boys Championship and with the capture of the Bain at Strathpeffer he joins the list of double winners Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) 2001, Gary Thomson (Moray) 1997, Ewan Forbes (Grantown on Spey) 1990, and John Campbell (Grantown on Spey) 1977 & 1978.
No longer a schoolboy Gaittens has begun an apprenticeship as a painter and this is good news for the North District who hope he will remain in the area and become an important team member. He justified his scratch rating with a first round one under par score card of 66 then added a second round 70 to discard his runner’s up tag from twelve months ago at Boat of Garten and win by a comfortable six shots from Ali Begg, (Muir of Ord) and Andrew Bailie (Elgin).
His first nine holes were turned into a count of 34 with a birdie at the par fine ninth hole before hitting a hot run of three birdies over the first four inward holes to come home in 32 for 66.
Although Gaittens’ first round lead over Begg was just one shot, and he fell behind to the Muir of Ord member in the second round from a poor opening four holes, he regained his advantage with a two on the sixth and with his second birdie of the day at the par five 9th the Fortrose junior still managed an outward count of 35.

As the afternoon rain got heavier Begg fell back to a disappointing second round 75 to post the clubhouse target of 142, eventually equalled by Baillie with another solid 71 from the Elgin member.
The eventual champion began his final nine holes with three 3’s and although he pulled a tee shot into trouble at 14th to make a bogey six and a final three putt on the sloping 18th green he signed off in 70 for the unassailable total of 136 over the remaining players out on the course.
Ali Begg, recent winner of the Ronal Rafferty order of merit competition at Brora although slipping back to third place on his second round score was the leading under 16 year old with his gross 142 and when it came to the handicap winners the host club will be looking forward to possible future scratch winners when all four places were filled by their junior members.
Kevin Ince lead the way with net scores of 63 and 68 for 131 and followed to the prize giving table by club mates Craig Mackay, Liam Kennedy and Luke Manson
Elgin juniors seem to like Ross-shire venues for their only previous team success for the Emslie Shield came at Muir of Ord and at Strathpeffer their team of four, Andrew Bailie142, Danny Edwards 151, Peter Ramsay 152, and Derek Ramsay 156 posted the winning total of 601

The following article about JAMES BYRNE, who is making his debut for the Scotland men's team in this week's European amateur team championship at Western Gailes, is reproduced from The Scottish Institute of Sport Foundation's website www.inthewinningzone.com by kind permission of executive director GRAHAM F WATSON.
THE WINNING ZONE
EDITION 7 - JULY 2007
Rising Banchory star James Byrne won't stop until he reaches the top

JAMES BYRNE QUESTION AND ANSWER INTERVIEW

James Byrne is one of Scotland’s hottest golfing prospects. A multi-talented athlete, Byrne was also a top-class swimmer until he decided to focus his sporting ambitions solely on golf in 2004.
And it has been a worthwhile decision.

He admits himself that the self-discipline required to undertake a 20 hour per week swimming schedule on top of his golfing and school commitments have been of benefit to him now he has focused his attention on sinking the ball rather than staying afloat.
The Banchory lad has had quite a career since he turned his attention to the fairways green. He represented Scottish Boys as a junior, and he is now taking to the adult stage for Scotland at this month’s European Amateur Team Championship at Western Gailes Golf Club, where he will line up alongside US Amateur Open Champion Richie Ramsay.
Byrne’s next adventure will be a scholarship at Arizona State University in the US, where he (and Scotland) hopes he will hone his skills sufficiently to become a top professional in the near future. And he has set his standards high – he wants to be ranked number one in the world and play in the Ryder Cup.
No doubt you will agree he sounds like a winner, which is why In The Winning Zone caught up with him for a chat to find out more…
WZ: Hi James, thanks for speaking with us. In your relatively short career, what would you say has been the most important influence on you so far?
James: My parents. They introduced me to golf at a young age and when they saw that I had potential they supported me fully. Without their ongoing encouragement I would not have had the opportunities I have been given.
WZ: Tiger Woods claims he wasn’t talented as a youngster, that hard work made him the player he is. With that in mind, how much would say is down to talent, and how much is owed to hard work and practice?
James: It is a talent itself to have the dedication and patience to practice. In my opinion it is 100% down to hard work and striving to improve to make yourself successful. But clearly you need some talent to start with.
WZ: Did you have any roles models in golf growing up? Who were they, and what influence have they had on shaping your career?
James: Tiger Woods. I admired his decision to complete his college education when he was constantly being persuaded to turn professional. This has greatly influenced my decision to attend university in Arizona this coming August and complete my four year degree.
WZ: As a junior moving onto the men’s circuit, what are you looking for most – performance or victories? (i.e. would you rather play badly and win or play well and not win?)
James: Play badly and win. I feel that in the long term, winning will be more important for my confidence.
WZ: When you are playing, what do you feel gives you the edge over other golfers? What makes you think – ‘I can win this?’
James: Mental strength and resilience. I know that I have the physical and tactical ability. However, if I don’t believe that I can win then I am already at a disadvantage to players who do.
WZ: What has been your most memorable moment on the golf course to date?
James: Victory on the final day against Ireland to win the Boys Home Internationals for the first time in 11 years. The pressure of the situation coupled with the immense team spirit was something that I will always remember.
WZ: And what is your long term ambition? What is necessary for you to reach that goal?
James: To compete and ultimately win on the PGA Tour. Working hard on all aspects of my game both physically and mentally. Allowing myself to mature and learn from every experience on the golf course.
WZ: How big is the step up from junior to senior? And then how big a step is it to go from there to the pro circuit?
James: Competing at the highest level of junior golf has made the transition to the men’s ranks much easier. Whilst I respect the achievements of others I have belief in my own ability. It is a much bigger step to the professional ranks but I am sure with continued hard work and development I will achieve that goal.
WZ: What made you want to be a golfer?
James: Watching the top players compete on television and my own personal enjoyment playing and competing.
WZ: Do you need much motivation or mentoring on the course, or do you prefer to keep to yourself
James: I feel that I can always learn from others but ultimately it is my responsibility to keep myself motivated and remain focused under pressure situations.
WZ: Thanks James. Good luck in the championships!

MICHAEL SIM EARNS $9,408 IN
BUICK OPEN AS BATEMAN
HOLES WINNING BIRDIE PUTT

Aberdeen-born Michael Sim, the only Scot playing on the US PGA Tour, earned $9,408 for a joint 73rd place finish in the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club.
Michael, brought up at Perth, Western Australia after his parents emigrated from Westhill/Cults when he was seven - Michael is now 23, had rounds of 72, 68, 75 and 73 for a total of 288.
It was not one of Sim's best all-round performances but least he is now making cuts and is fit enough to play four rounds off the reel. Remember, Michael was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the lower back in the late autumn-early winter last year and had to rest for four to five months. He only resumed played in April-May.
Brian Bateman holed a 15ft birdie putt on the last green to avoid a four-man play-off for the magnificent trophy (pictured right) and the $882,000 first prize.

NEWS OF WEE COUNTY GOLFERS' EXPLOITS

IT'S BEEN A SILVER WEEK FOR CLACKMANNAN BIG TWO

BY ROVING REPORTER HUGH HUNTER

It appears that last week’s golden week for Clackmannan County golf was no fluke, and the good work of Scott Borrowman and Callum Macaulay continued into their next events. The follow up is probably best described as a silver week due to a couple of near misses.
First up was Dollar’s Scott Borrowman. Playing in the Youths International against Ireland at West Waterford, Scott was the only team member to win both his foursomes and singles games. Playing with Lewis Kirton in the foursomes, he won his game by 5 and 3, and followed this with a singles win by 2 and 1, so playing a major part in the win for the Scottish Youths.
The Scottish youths stayed on for the Irish Youths Championship on the same course, and Scott gave the local star Seamus Power a run for his money. After three rounds, Scott was only one shot behind, and actually caught Seamus by the 12th, going one shot ahead. Water trouble at the 14th and an unplayable lie at the 16th let a relieved Seamus off the hook and left Scott in the runner-up spot three shots behind with a five-under-par score of 283 for the 72 holes.
Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay continues to churn out good scores in major golf events. His most recent trip to the East of Scotland Championship at Lundin Links this weekend resulted in the runner up spot behind Duncan Stewart after 72 holes.
Callum stamped his dominance on the event after the first two rounds, with a first round of 67, (best first round) and should have maintained a two shot lead at the close of play on Saturday. However, in awful weather, he dropped three shots over the last four holes to finish one behind the tournament leader Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) at two under par.
In the final two rounds, playing together, they clearly inspired each other. Tied after 54 holes, Duncan ran away with the title when he had a purple patch of six birdies in eight holes from the sixth, thanks to superb putting. Callum could not match Duncan’s final round of 64 and had to be content with second position and the Haig Salver (Callum on left, Duncan on right in Hugh Hunter's picture above).
With a couple of ranking events still to go before the Scottish Amateur Championship at Prestwick later this month, both Macaulay and Borrowman must be feeling confident of maintaining their good form – Callum is also trying for a spot in the Open Championship at Carnoustie by entering the qualifying event.
The recent good performances of both players are reflected in the Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (and also the Scottish Golf rankings)—Callum moves up to 62nd spot (up 91 places) and is the fourth best Scot at present. Scott appears in the rankings for the first time in a rather lowly position, but his ranking almost certainly going to improve.

CENTRAL SCOTLAND SENIORS' TOURNAMENT
Last week's event at Stirling attracted a good entry including some Wee County golfers. Best of the locals was one-handicapper Tony Stafford (Alloa) who finished in sixth place with rounds of 76 and 73, five shots behind the winner John Fraser from the Royal Burgess club.
Other locals Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) and Ray Barton (Alloa) finished a bit further down the field. Three other Scottish elite seniors’ events take place in July with the top players over all five events qualifying for finals at Blairgowrie at the end of August.

SCOTTISH BOYS UNDER-16s, UNDER-14s CHAMPIONSHIPS

The annual Championships for the younger age groups of boys (and under-14 girls) take place next week at the Brunston Castle Golf Course in Ayrshire. The Under 16s title is decided over three rounds, and Clackmannan county boys champion Grant Dowie (Alloa) will be testing his skills against 120 elite boy golfers, handicaps 6 or better) from both Scotland and abroad. The event is decided over three rounds of stroke play.
In the Under-14s age group, there are four locals competing, thanks to an initiative of the Clackmannan County Golf Union. President Sam Kinnaird explained: “Playing in National events can be difficult because of cost and finding suitable transport, and I am pleased that Clackmannan County will be running a minibus to take the County’s elite under-14s to the National Championship.”
Four locals will benefit from this arrangement (and there will even be a number of supporters travelling with the boys!) -- Lawrence Allan (Alva), Michael Barrett (Braehead), Jamie Pollock (Braehead) and Gary Chalmers (Dollar). They will join the field of 84 junior boys and 30 junior girls playing 18 holes for the titles

ROSS McGOWAN WINS AGAIN ON CHALLENGE
TOUR - THIS TIME BY THREE STROKES

England’s Ross McGowan captured his second title of the 2007 Challenge Tour season after a final round of 66 at Quinta da Marinha secured a three-stroke victory in the Estoril Challenge de Portugal at Quinta de Marinha, Cascais, about 25 miles to the west of Lisbon.
The 25 year old, who won the Oceanico Developments Pro-Am Challenge a month ago, finished at 12 under par 272 and three strokes clear of Welshman Stuart Manley, who closed with a 68. England’s Robert Coles was a further stroke back at eight under par after also shooting a 68 with another Welshman, Jamie Donaldson, in fourth place on seven under after a 72.
Overnight leader Peter Baker, bidding for a second successive victory, dropped four shots in the last two holes for a 74 to finish in joint fifth place with fellow Englishman Daniel Denison (70) at five under par.
Instead McGowan was left to claim a comfortable victory with a round containing five birdies and an eagle which even a double bogey could not take the gloss off. He becomes the third Challenge Tour player, after Italy’s Edoardo Molinari and Dutchman Joost Luiten, to win two titles this season and all will be chasing a third victory which gives immediate promotion to The European Tour.
Victory earned him €20,800 and lifted him to fourth on the Challenge Tour Rankings.
“Winning in Manchester a few weeks ago was great and this just proves it was no fluke,” said the 2006 English Amateur Champion who is embarking on his rookie season after turning professional at the end of last year.
“This is my eighth tournament in a row and it is nice to finish that run on a high before I take a bit of a break. I am just trying to a Tour card for next year and hopefully I will then be competing against the big boys.”
With conditions in Cascais easing from the previous two days, McGowan, trailing Baker by two strokes at the start of the final day, made immediate in-roads with birdies at the second, sixth and ninth holes. But it was his eagle on the par five tenth that took him clear of the field.
A three wood off the tee left him needing a two iron to reach the green and he rose to the challenge, firing in to ten feet and holing the putt. He picked up another birdie on the 13th and while his double bogey on the 15th made the finish a little tougher, he made sure of victory with a fifth birdie of the round on the 17th after pitching to two feet.
He now heads straight to Sunningdale for the 36 hole Open Championship International Final Qualifying tournament before taking a well-earned break.
“I will make myself ready to play 36 holes and fingers crossed as I have never played in The Open,” he added.

JOURNAL CUP FOGGED OFF AT PORTLETHEN

The North-east District inter-club team championship for the Journal Cup, scheduled for Portlethen Golf Club today, had to be postponed because of fog. The greenkeeping staff had the course playable despite the amount of rain in the previous 24 hours but the fog closed in on Portlethen and the visibility was too poor to permit play.
The tournament has been rearranged for the same venue on Sunday, August 12.

The sweet smile of success - Duncan Stewart with the East of Scotland Open amateur championship trophy.

DUNCAN STEWART SIGNS OFF WITH A 64 TO

WIN EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN BY FOUR

STROKES FROM CALLUM MACAULAY

Highlander Duncan Stewart scaled some personal peaks to win the East of Scotland Open amateur golf championship at Lundin Golf Club, Fife today.

The 23-year-old from Grantown on Spey, recently returned after four successful years on the American college circuit as a student at Jacksonville University, Florida, produced a brilliant last round of seven-under-par 64 to win by four shots from Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) who was level with Duncan with one round to go.

Stewart's earlier rounds were 67, 71 and 70 and his final total was 12-under-par 272.

Macaulay, beaten semi-finalist in the recent British amateur championship and, like Stewart, home after four years golf in America as a student at the University of Mississippi, had scores of 67, 72, 69 and 68 for 276.

"I just love these greens," said Duncan who had only 27 putts in his final round of eight birdies – at the third, sixth, seventh, ninth, 10th, 12th and 16th in halves of 32 (four under par) and 32 (three under pars).

"Hard to believe I played so badly in my practice round on Friday, that my partners were laughing at me. I seriously thought about pulling out of the tournament because I didn't think I could break 80 playing like that.

But I decided to have a go – and everything fell into place."

Duncan won the prestigious Chiberta Grand Priz over 72 holes in France last year and retained the North District championship within days of coming home from the States. But this is his first SGU Order of Merit 72-hole tournament success. He lost a play-off for the North-east Open title to Mark Kerr at Deeside two years ago.

Stewart did not make all the running. Macaulay took the lead on the inward half of Saturday's second round, played in torrential rain, but dropped three shots within sight of the clubhouse, that would come back to haunt him.

Then Callum, hanging on to Stewart's bootlaces throughout, hauled himself into the lead near the end of the third round – but took three from the edge of the 18th green and a bogey allowed Stewart to go in for Sunday lunch sharing the lead.

Then came Duncan's birdie fireworks as thunder rumbled around the course with a soaking shower every so often.

Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) pulled himself into the picture with a third-round 66 and finished joint third with former Scottish match-play champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) on 280. Gavin was officially placed third after a countback. Both had a final round of 69.

The 72-hole tournament finished just in time. The heavens opened as the prizegiving took place in the clubhouse and so intense was the rain that the greens were awash in next to no time.

STEWART, MACAULAY SHARE EAST OPEN LEAD

EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Lundin Golf Club, Fife.

Callum Macaulay, who took over the lead from Duncan Stewart on the inward half of Saturday's second round, before dropping three shots in the torrential rain over the last few holes, regained the advantage over his rival in the third round – but lost it again with a bogey at the 18th hole.

Macaulay had birdied the 17th to get to six under par for the tournament but missed the green at the last and took three to get down from a grassy, sloping lie.

Stewart, who had a 70 for five-under-par 208, and Macaulay, 70, also for 208 share the pole position, two shots ahead of Scott Henry (69-210) with Gavin Dear (66-211), Glenn Campbell (69-211), Stephen Neilson (69-211) and the 2005 champion and last weekend's Tennant Cup winner, Wallace Booth also on 211 after a 69.

Thunder is rolling on the south side of the bay. Let's hope it stays over there.
