STAY AT GREYWALLS AND DREAM …
YOU ARE GOING TO GO NEXT DOOR AND WIN THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TOMORROW
When the 2007 Senior British Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, is hosted by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield you can bet a new pair of golf shoes on the fact where most of the top players will be staying – but only if they have booked well their rooms well in advance!
Greywalls Hotel, looking out over the course and adjacent to Muirfield’s eighth fairway, is one of the most famous golfing hotels in the world.
Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson are five winners of Open championships at Muirfield who were in residence at Greywalls when they chalked up their memorable major victories.
It’s a country house hotel par excellence, the nearest place conceivable to a golfer’s paradise.
There are 10 splendid golf courses within five miles of Greywalls, of which four are used for championship play. We’ve mentioned Muirfield, one of Scotland’s five Open championship venues.
Also Gullane and North Berwick between them offer the choice of five very good courses.
UNIQUE RETREAT
This unique retreat has an enviable reputation, good food, superb wines and friendly, professional service. Greywalls is the perfect venue for a relaxing break.
Driving up to Greywalls, you are immediately enveloped by the charm and intimacy of this unique country retreat, built by the world renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 1900s. Just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, Greywalls is the perfect hideaway in which to indulge in good food and fine wine, and to unwind in the exceptionally comfortable surroundings of a well-loved family home.
Set in an enchanting walled garden, the hotel exudes Edwardian elegance with 23 bedrooms individually adorned with fresh flowers, classic art, antiques and books. Some of these rooms have French windows and a verandah with views down to the Firth of Forth.
Six of the rooms sit outside the main hotel in lodges and gatehouses, which are all a part of Lutyen’s original plans. The two gatehouses once housed the footmen, SIXTEEN in one room, and now provide secluded accommodation at the bottom of the drive, while the King’s Loo, quite literally providing the facilities for King Edward VII’s toilette when he visited, is now a luxury suite set apart from the house and favoured by honeymoon couples.
ROOM FOR EIGHT
The four-bedroom Colonel’s House offers private accommodation for groups of up to eight. A housekeeper cooks full Scottish breakfast in the mornings, giving guests independence and privacy with all the comforts of an hotel.
Over the years the hotel has built up an enviable reputation for its excellent food, using the best of Scotland’s well-stocked larder. Head Chef David Williams, who came to the hotel from London’s Michelin Star restaurant Chapter One in early 2005, has brought a touch of the cosmopolitan to East Lothian’s No 1 restaurant. In the evening the restaurant is open to non-residents. There is also a small private dining room which will seat a maximum of 20, ideal for birthday parties and other intimate celebrations.
Greywalls has two tennis courts, a croquet lawn and putting green within the gardens. Apart from the wealth of championship golf courses, it is also surrounded by beautiful beaches, nature reserves and stately homes, offering its guests the ideal base for sporting activity as much for culture and indulgent relaxation.
Renowned for its warm welcome and personal approach, Greywalls is a very special place to stay within a stone’s throw of Scotland’s capital city.
